91 camaro shifting problems.

All right to start off with I dont know much about cars but I know more than a few. Im disconnecting the driveshaft from the rear end so that me and my dad can pull out the engine and transmission at the same time. I have a 2.8 sitting in a totaled 89 rs that we want to swap out. The 3.1 in the new car overheats and we believe it is just going to be easier to swap it with an engine that we know is good then to track all the stuff that is wrong with this one. However I can not shift the tranny into neutral with the shifter or by crawling under the dang thing and trying to shift it by hand. I need to get it into neutral so that I spin the shaft and get to the other bolts on the u-joint. I have tried numerous times by going all the way forward on the shifter and getting my buddy to try to spin the driveshaft with no luck. So then we try one down and no luck and then continue the process untill the shifter is all the way down. But I am still unable to find neutral. Is there something I dont know of that is getting in the way?

So, lol my dad probably told me the same thing you guys were thinking. Get the tires off the ground and you can spin the shaft.
