Buy Junk Yard Or Fix What I Got

Hi All,
I've got an 83 Z28 camaro with what I believe to be a 700r4 tranny. The problem with the tranny is that when shifting into second it shifts very hard, but 3 and overdrive are fine. My question is, should I try to fix this one, or get a junkyard pulled one? I'm planning on swapping the 305 engine with a 350 or 396 so the whole driveterrain will be out soon anyway, also if I do buy a junkyard tranny, should I stick with the 700r4 or get somthing a little more stout.

Thanks, DacMan

Yes I did,
And there is this grid of scratches to tell you where you'r oil level is, if you know what I'm talking about (all lawnmowers have them) but then there is a "s bend" in the stick about a centemiter above the grid and the oil is past that . So I don't know what that means, I'll look at it again, but if the oil is overfull would that be a cause for harsh shifts?

Thanks, DacMan

High tranny fluid level can cause damage to the tranny. But itf you just drove your tranny for a long time the reading won't be accurate. Drive it around for like two minutes. Then, on a level surface pull the dipstick and feel the wet end. It'll be cool, warm or hot. If it's hot it'll be in or SLIGHTLY above the grid, warm slightly below, cool near the bottom. If there is too much fluid in there, drain it all out, replace your filter and fill it up. Then see how it shifts.
