What is the purpose form this?
It causes a direct drive action that acts like a manual clutch would.
How is it used?
It is engaged by the ECM depending on throttle position, RPM, speed, engine load, and the gear that the tranny is in at the time. I.E., it works in every gear except 1st.
Why is it used?
It reduces the RPM level at cruising speeds while under light load. It reduces engine wear, tranny heat, and increases MPG.
How do i know if i should make one?
Your car had one from the factory. If the TC that you are using has the lockup feature, then the ECM is already doing it for you. That's also if the
"Modded 700-R4" that you have also has the switch in it.
do you need them on a computer controlled car with a lock up converter?
If you do a lot of highway driving, then it is a good idea, for the reasons I posted above. In stop-and-go driving, the lockup feature does very little.
I believe all the aftermarket switches only lock up the TC in 4th gear.
Hope this helps a little.
