Tranny Dropped,Out need options and insight

(700r4 lockup with cooler 3.73 gears)so last month my car developed a knock/click(identical to the sound a osilating fan makes when you stick a pen in it) haha.. but anyway i was told my lifters where bad.. valves knocking etc etc.. i knew the sound was coming from the trans i just could not confirm.. so today i disconnected the torque converter from the flywheel and the noise stopped.. so the trans is coming out and i figure id take it to a tranny shop and see if the noise is from the converter itself or the trans.. i figure reguardless i replace the flywheel with a better performance one,, also ill jump up to a 2000rpm stall tq converter.. i figured id replace the tv cable and put in a performance torque arm and driveshaft since its down so i dont have to worry about this **** in the future.. when i bring the tranny into the trans shop. should request anything done to it.. i heard theres bands or something in there that can be adjusted or other things that would make sense bieng i have it out any help would be appreciated

Re: Tranny Dropped,Out need options and insight

All depends on what you want out of it. Shift kits are nice, but choose wisely. Some are far more brutal than others. Corvette servo is a common performance mod. I believe the servo controls how much pressure is used to apply the bands/clutches. Basically improves shifts and makes it harder/faster. Not sure if these cars have it stock or not.

Any tranny shop worth working with will replace the main sun gear with beefier version. They use one called "the beast" in my area.

I wouldn't bother replacing the flex-plate (flywheel for automatic). I don't see how much difference it would make, they don't weigh much to begin with.

TV cable is fine to replace, they're cheap enough. Torque arm is a nice mod if you can afford it, but certainly not necessary. It won't 'break', and an aftermarket driveshaft isn't necessary either but a nice touch and an aluminum shaft might shed a few pounds.

As far as the guts themselves, yes, they can use higher quality bands and increase the number of clutches in the clutch-packs. You should go to a shop with a good reputation, ask around. I had one trans redone and a year later some of the bearings on the hard parts (planetary gears) let go, filled the trans full of metal. I suspect they weren't checked for wear when the trans was put back together.

You get what you pay for with trans. rebuilds, go to a good shop that uses good parts and knows what they are doing.
