In my 88 the rear end sucks. I heard that the 3.08 std. was the most popular for the 305ci TBI with a t5. I need posi so i can actually race this thing. I've also heard that i need a mini spool. I don't exactly know what they are, i know what they do, and between me and my crippled uncle we can probably put it in. Is that the only thing i have to buy? And which one do i buy? Does the ratio matter? I can't remember how many bolts are on the cover, as the car is about 50 miles from where i live so i cant go check until this weekend. There was something about c-clip eliminators but i don't have a clue as to what those are or what they do. Is this a lost cause; should i just save up and get a new rear end? I don't have the greatest bank account and the races are next weekend... any help/advice is GREATLY appreciated.

If you plan on racing the car and not driving it on the street then the mini spool would work all right. Don't drive on the street with a mini spool or spool of any kind. They are dangerous on the street. Your '88 should have 26 spline axles. You will need to know that when ordering any differetnial parts for this car. The gear ratio doesn't matter with a mini spool. C clip eliminators are a good idea for racing, but not good on the street. Most of the time they leak oil when used on the street. They are designed for drag racing use.

If you do drive it on the street then I recommend getting a new Eaton Posi. This is a MUCH better option that a spool for street use. It is more expensive and more difficult to install, but well worth it.

Is there a really good reason for not using a spool on the street? It will probably mostly be a track car but i will drive it to school once in a while and out on friday nights etc.. I looked at jegs and the mini spools are like 130ish for the auburn ones and for a whole eaton posi it looked like 400+(maybe i saw the wrong one)

Spools break axle studs, axles and wheels on the street. The stress from turning corners will sometimes be too much for these parts when the axles can't turn at different speeds. With your small 26 spline axles I wouldn't want to take the chance.
