Axle diameter issues!!!!! Please help

My 92 G80, G92,GU5, J65.. posi disc 3.23 has a larger diameter axle at the splines.. anyone know why or where to get the right axle.. I've tried 28 spline axles out of 2 diff. 91 rears both of those were smaller in diameter, those were both drum rearends.. is the diameter different for a disc car?? Where is my best bet to get the right axle?? Thanks

Re: Axle diameter issues!!!!! Please help

As far as I know all of the 26 vspline axles are the same size and all of the 28 spline 10 bolt axles are the same size. I've never seen any other splines on a 7.5 10 bolt. Check the rear end and be sure that you know which one you have. Could be a Dana 44 or 9 bolt.

It's a 10 bolt... It's the orig rear.. end i'm the second owner my dad ordered the car new... I've never seen a different diameter till now.. The guts of this look different from my other posi units.. it doesn't have the springs in it. but it's not set up like the 9 bolts.. it's a 8mm bolt, slide the pin out, then c clips.

Well if it uses C-clips, it's not a 9 bolt or Dana 44. No 9 bolts were offered in production vehicles after 89 and the Dana 44 was an over the counter option. Your only other factory options are the 10 bolt with 28 spline, which is what the car should have come with or the smaller 26 spline if the diff was swapped for an older one but you say it's still original.

Hard to say exactly what you have without seeing pictures of it.

Re: Axle diameter issues!!!!! Please help

From the way you described taking it apart, it sounds like your carrier is just a standard, non-posi unit. And as stated above, all 90-92, 28 spline axles are the same diameter at the splines. I installed a 91, 10 bolt, 3.23 posi/disc rear in my 89. When I got it, I noticed one of the axles was slightly bent, so I went to the junkyard and grabbed an axle out of a 91 drum rear, and it fit/works perfectly. On that note, I'm at a loss to explain why it wouldn't be the same with the rear you've got. Btw, whether it's posi or open carrier shouldn't make any difference in the axle size either. Maybe you've actually got one of the rare Dana 44 rears?
