First V8 - Some questions to engine and transmission
hi guys. this is my first post in this forum. i registered in another camaro forum first, but it seems like they dont really care for the 3rd gen. so i hope im right here. i have one or two questions about the car.
first of all, sorry for my english - its not my first language. i moved from europe to san juan in puerto rico and even if i have experience in rebuilding engines and the entire car, a v8 is still new to me. i used to built extreme 1,6 turbo engines. my last project was a escort rs turbo (rare version) but i sold it for moving to the caribbean.
the camaro is my first v8 and even if i always like ford and mustangs, i just dont like the design of the 80's and 90's mustangs.
what i know about the camaro are the following details.
its a 350, trnsmission turbo 350, tapas 370, headers, roller rockers scorpions and so on. the owner (his brother rebuilt the engine and everything else) told me something about double point. thats one of my first questions. i dont know what he mean because he said something aboout the crankshaft ( but he also dont speak good english) but i guess he ment camshaft. he also thinks that this engine, except the injection is from a corvette, im not quite sure but i asked him if it could be, because that car is REALLY fast for that weight.
the only problem i could find was something with the autom. transmission. it doesnt shift in the 2nd gear. it gets up to 4000-5000rpm and shifts, but it sounds like it shifts from 1 to 3 and the 2nd gear doesnt work. first he hoped it could just be a adjust problem because they changed all those parts with the engine but it seems more like there is a gear missing. i guess you guys agree. so since i dont like automatic - for me thats for womans and people who cant drive (also in europe nobody everybody use standard), i would like to change that transmission to standard.
i didnt had any time to get the car here yet and i only have some crappy pics in the dark with flash light, but maybe somebody can tell me some more about this engine looking at the pics. here the links:
Re: First V8 - Some questions to engine and transmission
www.hawksthirdgenparts.com can hook you up with everything you need to install any manual transmission you want. You have several good choices. The cheapest being a used T5, the best being a T56.
Re: First V8 - Some questions to engine and transmission
sounds good. i gonna check if they ship to PR as well.. first i wanna see if the problem on the transm. is somethng small that i can get some time driving autom. until i have all parts i need.
Re: First V8 - Some questions to engine and transmission
thats a good lookin engine.
i dont know if you have any fourth generation parts cars around where you are, but i recommend yanking a 6 speed standard (T56) out of a Z28 or SS.
the best to get would be from a 94-97.
if you got a T5 from another third gen it could break pretty easily because they arent rated for the power a 350 puts out, while the T56 is more than strong enough.

ah thank you. that is interesting since i dont know anything about us cars yet (well in detail) it is good to know that the t56 is the 6 speed. i really want to go for a 6 speed because even with my old 4cyl turbo escort i had to much power that i needed a 6th gear.
im pretty sure i can get something like that here. there are tons of those cars driving around here. thank you
Re: First V8 - Some questions to engine and transmission
the best way to tell what the engine came out of is to get the casting number off the block. I'm not exactly sure where its located, but I know other people here know and can probably chime in and help out. Have you tried putting it im second gear manually instead of just leaving it in drive?

i still dont have him at my house cause i just moved and i left the car at the house of the previous owner. but i will check all that. the first thing i gonna do it to clean the engine totally anyways.
for the gear, yes i drove it another time just to try that but i just cant get those gears in. only until "D". it is also very hard to shift. i almost need 2 hands sometimes.
Re: First V8 - Some questions to engine and transmission
yea it took me forever to realize the difference between the T56 and T5 so i thought id let you know in case you didnt.
i dont believe all T56 trannies will fit into these cars
if you find one make sure you ask in these forums if it will fit a third gen.
like i said, the best one to get would be out of a 94-97 Z28 or SS.
im pretty sure the 98-02 ones wont fit.
Re: First V8 - Some questions to engine and transmission
Yep, 98-02 ones only bolt to LS motors. If you do an LSX swap you can use one, though. The 94-97 LT1 T56's will bolt to any block, but it needs a 1 pc rear main seal to fit the stock flywheel. Otherwise you'll need to get a conversion flywheel... pricy.
