Just curious, i found a good deal on a 700r4 and was curious how it would hold up to a LS1? It is a gm crate tranny, very low miles, supposedly 10,000 to be exact. I am trying to get it verified before i purchase but i could save several hundrend dollars this way if it will hold up to the extra horsepower and torque.

Much of the answer depends on your driving, the rest depends on the mods you'll do to the engine. Be aware that the front pin on a SBC converter is dfferent than on an LSx converter, you have a few options. Which is best partly depends on your budget, and partly on what you want for a cam in that LSx. A stock 700R-4, of the '87-up variety, should survive a long time in a high-13-second F-car. Plan on a Corvette servo as the minimum upgrade if you go this route.
Thanks for the reply, i did not know that the pins are different, but i would have found out when i tried to install my converter.
As far as mods, i know it had a little headwork done, some porting, and it has a ls6 cam in it, other than that it will be a set of headers and catback exhaust with high flow cats and that is about it. So it should hold for daily driving assuming i dont beat it to death then. Which i dont plan to because there will be a lot of blood sweat and tears into this thing.
A few other points to be aware of. The VSS is not a big deal, but you'll need a bracket to let the Throttle Valve cable be run by your stock-styly TB, which wasn't designed to operate a TV cable. I believe you can get one from either Lokar or Bowtie Overdrives. Also, your computer is expecting you to have the 4L60E, so you'll need to reload it with the program for the manual trans version of your engine. You can use any 4L60E converter on that 700R if it's the '85-up style with the 30-spline input shaft, but if you want to reuse the converter from your failed 60E, you'll need to have that converter flushed out first.
I am glad you know all this stuff cuz i sure didnt. BUt just to be clear,
I am rebuilding a 91 camaro with a 305 tbi and 700r4 tranny, the 305 is dead and trashed, i am putting in a ls1 that i got a good deal on, i have no computer for the ls1 yet. i thought either a 700r4 or 4l60e would work.
All you gave us to go by was your sig, so I assumed you wanted to put it in the GTO. Which is possible. But Unless you put a carburetor on your LSx, the electronics issues I typed about still apply. I suggest you hunt around for a used flexplate from an '01 or so truck 5.3L, that's the cheapest solution, then I suggest mating that to either this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-242938/ or something very much like it.
you are right, i did not give you much to go on.
I have a question, if i were to get a computer and wiring from a 4th gen ls1 car such as a camaro or transam or something, something with the auto tranny, wouldnt that be what i need as far as electronics go? Too simple?
3.1eyecandy had one mounted behind an ls1. but i think the cable operation got to be too much. i believe that he went with a 4l60e/ look him up or pm him to let him tell you the problems.

The T56 programming is only looking for a VSS signal, it's the one to use with a 700R-4. You don't want the 4L60E programming unless you're going to use a 4L60E.
