New trans. leaks like crazy

i just put a newly rebuilt th350 in my 1988 camaro, everything is new, i got it fired up and now it moves but not right away i have to hit the gas to get it to move and it seems like it requires alot of rpm's to do so. also it pours fluid out the front at the front main, but its new. the only thing i can think of is that the new tranny filter i put on bolted up the same but it looks nothing like the old one?would that cause this, the old filter looked like it drew fluid from the top but this looked like it wanted to draw fluid from the bottom.
