How much power can a 8.5" 10 bolt be built for?

Re: 10 bolt

There is no good answer for that question. Some will break at 300 and some will go over 400. Depends on the car, tires, suspension, transmission...

you do know I'm talking about a 8.5" 10 bolt, not a 7.5" right?

I think I remember seeing a magazine arcticle once that said the 8.2 could be built to handle 600hp, so a 8.5 should be more than that. are you planning on somehow putting an 8.5 in your third gen?

Maybe, it depends on how much power it would take, I don't want to swap one POS for another

I know they were never a factory piece in a third gen, and would require fabbing up a torque arm bracket.I also know that they were popular with the G body crowd as a replacement for the 7.5.

Re: 10 bolt

No, I didn't see the part about the 8.5. I assume too many things sometimes.

The 8.5 can be built to handle a lot of power. There are many cars running into the 9s with the 8.5 rear end. You can upgrade the 8.5 to 30 or 35 spline axles. The pinion bearings are as large as the 12 bolt. If you get the later 8.6 housing then the differential bearings will also be the same as the 12 bolt. One of the biggest problems with the F body 8.5 is the bad plug welds in the axle tubes. These 8.5 housings need the axle tubes fully welded to keep the tubes from rotating in the center casting. This must be done correctly because you are welding cast iron to mild steel.

Re: 10 bolt

Does anyone have a gasket template for an 8.5" 10 bolt that I can get some measurements off of?

Thanks-

Eric

Re: 10 bolt

The 8.5 and 8.2 Chevy 10 bolt use the same gasket. You should be able to get one at just about any auto parts store.

Re: 10 bolt

I had an 8.5 in my 78 trans with a 496 bb that ran 9.80's with 1.5 60 foot times off a foot brake. Just had 4.10's with a good differntial and welded up the axle tubes. Had stock axles too!!! Was great until I started launching off the trans brake at 5k. Then I broke with pinion in half.

Re: 10 bolt

what size axles did the 8.5 inch ten bolts come with? would the 28 spline axles in the 7.5 inch 10 bolt of my 91 fit a 8.5 inch ten bolt if it had 28 spline axles?

Re: 10 bolt

Yes, if the length is the same. The 8.5 had 28 spline axles up to about '89. They were upgraded to 30 spline axles after that. Car and truck axle bearings are not the same size, so your car axles won't work in a truck housing.

On second thought, I'm not sure about the c clip size. The 7.5 might have used smaller c clips. I'd have to check on that.
