need help with tranny for a 383

I have an '83 camaro with a built 383, heads, intake, exhaust, etc., but the 700r4 is havin a hard time shiftin from 2nd to 3rd, should i get the 700r4 rebuilt, or switch to a th350 or something like that, i really want overdrive but usually stay in town anyway, i dont have a lot of money, and cant do it myself yet,
PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE SOME EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE.
Also, i have found a good th350 short tail and i know ill need the torque arm converter, would this be a good/cheap swap?

P.S. dont know specifically what it has in it, new car with limited info from seller(not the one who built car), was used competitively for racing, reinforced body, suspension, lots of weight removed, scary fast car

Re: need help with tranny for a 383

Takes a bunch of $$$$$$ to get a 700R4 to stand up to big horsepower... A good stock rebuild using quality parts is going to be about $1,000.00, so go up from there for a 700 that will stand up to 400+ horsepower... 350's are ok, probably a lot cheaper to build but not really that great behind big horse engines. A 400 is a good trans, with a good build it will live longer then most behind big horse engines....

Cheap and high performance seldom go together in the same sentence.......
