Neutral safety switch? Does car start in neutral, or only in park? (it's a guess - it's been years since I was under my console!)

Re: cable unattached under consol

its the cable that runs to the ignition switch to keep you from shutting the car off completely while in gear and keep it from starting anywhere but park and nuetral

clearly its been dismembered, it also looks like the clip that is supposed to retain the shifter cable is missing, might want to do something about it before you get left stranded in park or in a gear you dont want to be

Re: cable unattached under consol

YES all it is a nuetral safety cable. I disconnected mine for numerous reasons. First is because it was corroded and wasn't properly functioning and second i am taking out the automatic transmission so i won't need it. It doesn't harm nothing not to be on there. Also it messed up the ignition switch ect.. just a problematic thing imo. Also since i changed out the steering wheel shaft and column it has the lock in the ignition for manual transmissions. so its a hassle to deal with leave it. imo but if you do put it back on just make darn sure you make sure the ignition switch is correctly aligned or you will burn out ur ignition switch.
