I've read all the other threads on the subject and have a pretty good understanding of what's involved, but have a couple other question. The plan so far is too buy the Umi Performance Torque Arm Relocation Kit, TH350.
I'll find a 9" version of the turbo 350 so I can use my stock driveshaft too. My question are:
I read about running a vaccum line for the modulator, can anyone give some more info on that?
Will I need a new shifter since I am going from a 4 speed to a 3 speed?
Anything else I am missing or forgetting?
Car doesn't see much interstate time and won't be going on any road trips, so not worried about the loss of the overdrive. The 700r4 in there now is slipping. My options were looking like picking up a $150 unkown quality used one, spending $700 on a rebuild of the current one, or do the swap and spend a few hundred bucks on a recently rebuilt turbo 350. So any of your opinions and expertise will be greatly appreciated.
I just did a swap. The vacuum line for the modulator needs to go to a full vacuum source off the carb/intake, I just used some thick rubber hose, just fyi though, the originally equipped cars in the past used a mostly metal line up the tunnel although I dont feel it really makes a difference as long as its away from heat. As for the shifter, the points in the stock shifter are different between the tranny's, the swap I just did had a console mounted b&m ratchet shifter, so that didnt matter for the swap I did because it is provisioned for either trannys. As far as what trans to use, in a 3.23 geared car, if you dont do much high speed driving, I think thats the way to go, I may even do it regardless of having all the stuff to swap in a manual for mine. I actually like it because they are geared better internally than the 700R4. Strength wise, if built right, they are durable, but not as durable as a th400. Just my 2 cents worth for ya.
So if I got a shifter from a camaro with the 200r4 would that work? Those were 3 speeds also weren't they. Far as the modulator line goes, guess I could hit a junk yard up and probably even find the original hard line used and probably get it to hook up even if I had to use rubber hosing at the carb.
your factory shifter will still work. like dellman said, you can just use a thick rubber line from the modulator to a full manifold source. and if you don't trust your tach, i'd look at getting the speedo gears to make that work right.

I totally forgot about the crossmember. Theres two choices there A: Find one from an 82 that had a 200c trans or B: Modify the old one like I did. I basically got a trans mount that had an offset stud from the bolts to the trans, then made a flat, thick bracket with two holes drilled in them. One was for the stud on the mount and the other hole was for the crossmember. Its a good temporary solution for now until I find a crossmember, or make one.
The 200r4 trans is an overdrive trans from earlier. As for the shifter, the stock one would probably work, dont know for sure, but I know the selector will more than likely be in different spots.
