Not a big fan of the 10 Bolt

I think this picture adequately sums up my frustrations with the GM 10 bolt.

Not sure yet, as I haven't pulled it apart yet. I pulled the passenger shaft and it was ok, no damage. There are three holes in the differential cover...

Looks like it busted the axle gears and let the c clips fall out, or the cross shaft might have broke and let the c clips fall out. Did it damage the body?

No damage to the body, thank god. My guess is the spider gears went out and allowed the C-clips to drop off the axles.

I managed to do exactly this with my '91 RS when it was pure stock, LO3/700R-4, just normal city driving. It was the cross shaft.

I'm probably going to just throw another 10 bolt in it and hope it holds for now. I have a 31 spline, big bearing 9" that will eventually end up underneath the car.

Re: Not a big fan of the 10 Bolt

that'll fix it. I've got my 10 bolt in my garage still waiting for my buddy. he has a pretty decent 355 a Th400 trans and a 9 bolt. One night I'll probably get a phone call: "steve, can you bring me some cardboard boxes and help me pick up whats left of my rear end?" I'm a little biased though, my dad went through 3 BW 9 bolts in 55k miles with his 84. back when that car was new.

Well, I felt the 'pop'. Then I eased into the gas to see exactly how bad it was and then engine spooled then caught, so I figured I was missing quite a few teeth of the ring gear or the spiders. It went about a quarter mile like that and then all of a sudden it 'popped' again and I had nothing. Then it started to slow down and when I glanced in my mirrors I saw both tires and couldn't help but laugh.

Re: Not a big fan of the 10 Bolt

I got my car with disc brakes and a locker diff

I plan on swapping a complete LS1 rear with torsen and big brakes as soon as finances allow but I dont plan on a lot of strip time.

Breakage like this must come down to GM's less than stellar quality control during the 80's and early 90's.

Re: Not a big fan of the 10 Bolt

mine was at about 10 mph, maybe 20 at most. I heard the bang, but felt nothing dramatic, and I was not more than half throttle. I had just pulled out of a gas station, and was rolling up to the red light not more than 100 yards away.

When it popped the first time I was merging onto the highway (about 3/4 throttle), doing about 55-60. I took the immediate exit and when it completely let go I was doing maybe 10 mph on the off ramp.

Hahahaha didn't know of anybody that would make their camaro a low rider. That looks ugly but the good thing is that there aren't any other damages

I've done that before. Not in a camaro but in my 83 truck. I was parked at a gas station. it was fine when i got there. But when i tryied to leave the rear tires locked up. I had no idea what happened. I was able to get it moving again and soon there after i noticed the axle shaft walking out. Had to tow it home. And once again it was the cross-shaft. broken in three pieces and cracked the carrier.

I guess the moral to this story is to install the aftermarket "Zytanium" one.

Try one of the LPW Ultimate covers. Adds allot of strength with the bearing cap studs and heavy cover. Here's a link to their site. http://www.lpwracing.com/p_capcovers.asp and here's one for their axle tube brace kits http://www.lpwracing.com/p_axletubebrace.asp

Well, to everyone who called the cross pin, congrats. I finally got around to pulling the differential cover today, the cross pin is in two pieces. My friend has pictures, as soon as he sends them to me I will post them.

A side note, if you had disc rear brakes at least the axles would've stayed in the housings.
