Adapting LS1 or Ford Transmissions?

I have decided I am going with a manual transmission in my camaro which will be set up for road racing. Being in Australia choices for manual transmissions for chevy small blocks is almost non existent. There are some T5s around from the V8 Holdens but people charge and arm and a leg for them and I think they would be too weak for what I want.

They only two transmissions that are commonly avalible for a reasonable price seem to be the LS1 T56 or the Mustang TR-3650. Being a race car I don't NEED a 6 speed but I hane read they are stronger, is this correct?

I figure for both transmissions I will at least have to get an adaptor bellhousing (I was going to a shatter proof one for safty anyway), change the input shaft, and modify the trans cross member.

So what are people opinions on adapting the LS1 or Mustang transmissions? Or would I be better off waiting and trying to get a LT1 T56 or GM Tremec TKO from the states?

the ls1 t56 can be made to work, it uses a hydraulic TO bearing instead of a fork, and you need an adapter plate to bolt i to a gen 1 engine, i think. The tr3650 i believe is the same basic trans as the tko, it can be made to work in a chevy, but it needs a different input shaft and an adapter plate.
Both are equally as strong

I'v been looking up the TR-3650 and it seems to be very similar to the TKOs. It would make for a easy TKO 600 upgrade down the line if it's needed. I was looking at using the Lakewood bellhousing # 15030 (link below) with a Mcleod hydraulic throw out bearing. Cable and fork clutch set ups would be a lot of work with my right hand drive conversion anyway.

Do you think this set would work with the right input shaft?

Re: Adapting LS1 or Ford Transmissions?

That should work, and you should look at quicktime and McLeod as both make conversions bellhousings also.

Liberty makes the 26-spline input you'll need:

The LS1 T56 can be mounted to a SBC with a conversions bellhousing that both Quicktime and McLeod sell now also, without having to deal with the Tremec adaptor plate. If you're looking to push the trans hard, you might just opt for the T56 from the start..
