hey there, I am rebuilding the 350 in my car this winter and had originally kept the tranny that was stock for the v6's. Any suggestions of what a good tranny to swap in there might be? Looking for preferablly a 4 or 5 speed manual. Something with minimal modifications but could handle the power would be great.
Depends on the power level, the type of driving you plan for the car, your budget, your DIY skills, etc.. Could be a T5, a TKO, a T56, a saginaw, etc..
Hello, I plan on doing the same this summer, does anyone know if a 350 from a '97 suburban would bolt up to the orginial tranny in my 87 firebird? its completely stock right now with the 2.8L V6..

The 350 from a suburban would not bolt to the v6 tranny, far as i know the 2.8l are 60* bell housing patterns and the patern for all first and second generation small blocks as well as the 4.3v6 are 90*. so you would need a tranny from any v8 camaro or firebird.
I think the the 2.8 has a 60 degree bellhousing bolt pattern. Some of the bigger V6"s used a 90degree bolt pattern, the same that is used on the small block chevys. I tried putting a small block chevy motor in a 87' and the tranny had the smaller bell housing, ended up changing the tranny too. Whatever you try to put in, check the bellhousing
Bigblockz, thanks. I had to change the bell housing when I used the tranny from the v6 to the 350 that is currently in there. Anyone know of the trannys mention by 85miketpi (the T5, a TKO, a T56, a saginaw) which has the minimal amount of modifications to the crossmember/if i'll be able to use the existing driveshaft? Also if any of these would take a tranny mounted torque arm or if they'll require the relocation bracket/cross member.
Ok, so could I grab just the bellhousing from any fbird or camaro and put it on my v6 tranny for now so i can drop in the 350? until i can afford to convert to the t56 setup.
