My friend and I are working on my 89 Camaro RS and for some reason we can't figure out why it wont go into park. It is an automatic transmission. You can put the shifter into park but it stays in reverse. And you can shut it off in park also. The way we keep it from moving is to have the E-Brake pulled up when it's off. Any ideas what's wrong?
Not quite sure but sounds to me that the park detent on the valve body of the trans is not doing its job, if it isn't keeping the trans in the park position it could move it's self in to reverse. I'm not auto trans expert, so i would wait to see what every one else says.

similar thing happened to me when i first got my car. The bolt that holds the shifter cable to the trans was loose. Jack up the car and look, its bolted to the driverside of the trans, on the pan bolts. If the bolt to hte pan or the bolt in the linkage itself is loose, the shifter wont work properly

I'll do that first thing in the morning. But I just drove it around and it will go into park but it wont stay in park. It seems like it does slide back into reverse and just won't "lock" into park.
Okay, I checked that out. I can manually "force" it into park. So should I just get a new cable or the thing that houses it (which is connected to the oil pan)?
