Stall Converter Help

I have a 84 camaro and i just bought a hughes 700r4/ 4l60 race tranny and i need help figuring out what stall i will need.. I have a 383 stroker and i have i decent size cam in it and iv been told that they run alot harder with a smaller size cam in it. so the cam i will be getting is a comp cam RPM Range of 1800 To 5800 250ish Duration. But what im asking is if i have a 1800 cam do i need around a 2000 stall?? Learning as i go so any help would be much appriciated!

Re: Stall Converter Help

I know this may sound stupid but it has to be asked. Is it street driven or all out drag car? I know people that use race transmissions on street cars. If it for the street the rule of thumb it 500rpm into the powerband. If it's an all out race car 1000rpm into the powerband.

Re: Stall Converter Help

This will be a street/ strip tranny, sorry left that out. but its not my daily driver, on the weekdays it will be street and track on the weekends. 500 into the rpm sounds more my range because i dont want to suffer driving it in town.

Re: Stall Converter Help

I'm sure some guys that know alot more than me will chime in with more complete info. The thing is, stall can be kind of tricky and won't be set in stone. Case in point, I have a 2500 stall converter in my junk. Now, with my little 305 foot braking, it's about 2grand or so, with your engine it'd probably be at least 2500. If you have a trans brake you can max it out. Considering your cam's rpm range, I'd think you would want to stay pretty mild on the stall, especially if it's street driven, I'm thinking something along the lines of what I'm running in mine. Also, be sure and install an after market tranny cooler, as the tranny will run hotter with the stall converter in it.

Re: Stall Converter Help

i have a vigilante 3500 lockup converter, and it pulls hard off the line, and I still get 19 mpg on the roads.
