4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
I know a guy who converted his 4 speed auto in his 92 RS into a 5 speed automatic. I started to think about it & it sounded like a good idea for me to do if I really wanted to. I talked to another friend of mine who said I could get a 5 speed auto out of a Camaro SS LS1 & have it installed into my IROC. What do you guys think about this? Is it possible and how much might it cost me? What kind of parts would I need to replace?
Re: 4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
Yea I'm almost positive the LS1 F-body autos are 4 speed automatics. What would be the purpose of this swap anyways? I'm not really seing the point, unless you had an LS1 to go in with it. There is nothing wrong with the 700R4.

I want an extra gear without having a manual. Most newer cars these days have 5 & 6 speed automatics. Some more expensive cars have 7, 8, and on up. The 4 speed auto is slowly dying off. I know the 700r4 is good too. I just thought it'd be nice if I could convert to have an extra gear.

Ok, gotcha. As far as the swap, I think the 5th gen camaros have a 5 speed auto but the swap prob wouldn't be cheap! Any 5 speed auto is going to be computer controlled as well so you would need whatever control system the tranny required. Seems like it wouldn't be easy. If you decide to try it though, let me know! Good luck.

Re: 4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
4th gens have a 4speed auto
5th gen camaros (brand new ones) have a option of a 5 speed auto
again, you would need a computer to control it, and in the end, you would spend a lot of money making it work.
if you swap to a LS1 engine, you will already have the computer necessary to control a electronic transmission.
if you are staying with a old school V8, you really dont have many options other than buying a bunch of redundant stuff.

I hear you all. However I see many guys going for the LS1 stuff in their 3rd Gen's and I find it cool but at the same time it's taking away the value of the original car. The TPI 350 is an awesome powerful motor to build up on. That's why I'll probably keep it in the car for along time & I'll keep building up on it & around it. It's so easy to boost horsepower/torque into these kind of engines, unlike a 305 or v6. But thanks for the answers guys & I'll keep researching this topic.
Re: 4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
For some reason, this thread seems wrong to me. I never thought chevy had made a 5 speed auto, just the 2,3,4, and the new 6 speed. what is the trans code? if it starts with 4 it's a four speed (4l60e, 4l65, 4l80). Are you sure it's not the new 6 speed? that would be an awesome trans for a swap, and tci makes one with the electronics module included, and even a slap shifter thingy.
