Need a little help with some specs on these two transmissions. The info I have found doesn't seem right. First off does anyone have the weight difference between the two transmissions? Having a hard time finding this info. Secondly this is what I have found about the horsepower.

200r4-- consumes 28 horsepower
700r4-- consumes 70 horsepower

This seems awfully wrong can anyone coment on this info? I know the ford c6 I believe is a HP hog and requires 66Hp but the 700r4 seems a little high.

According to website that 200-r4 is only 9 lbs lighter. I know 200-r4's can also be built for performance as I've seen a Carter build once in a magazine, but overall there not as common.

As for the HP loss differences I'm sure that is a question Dana (Pro-Built Automatics) could answer for you.

My mechanic and I just had this conversation last week, talk about uncanny timing! He mentioned the fellow that rebuilds tranny's in town has a 200r4 behind his 3rd gen Camaro and he swears by it. Of course, he rebuilt it for the beefier motor he has in it too. Mentioned something about no overdrive or has to manually engage overdrive or that the inner workings worked on pressures instead of electronics like the 700r4.

Anyway, my point being he talked up the 200 over the 700 cause it was lighter and possibly stronger.

I doubt the 200-r4 is stronger than the 700-r4 in an OEM to OEM. If you look at that link above the side by side views of the parts show the 700-r4 parts look much beefier. As for aftermarket ones I don't know about that.

If the 200-R4 was a better starting platform I would think Dana over at ProBuilt would use it instead of the 700-r4 or carry both. Being as he carries 700-R4s rated to 750+ HP.

You can get the 200-4r with the bellhousing to fit either a smallblock or a B.O.P. bolt pattern or both patterns . They even used it behined the Turbo TA in '89 .

The 200 is stronger than the 700, also has more metal internals than the 700, has better gear ratios, and can be built WAY stronger than the 700 ever has.

Art Carr is making them withstand over 1000hp, locally in MI there is another gentleman is making them live ALOT longer than 700s do.

SO to answer this debate, YES 200s are stronger than 700s and I DO believe they are built stronger from the factory as well. I know you can turn boost up on a v6 2004r and not hurt them like you would a boosted 700r4.

I was told by a very knowable source to get the 200 to into a 3rd gen, you need find a cross member from a special TransAm or maybe from an El Camino, I can't remember which.
If anyone has more complete info, please respond.

Also i was told you need longer driveshaft and torque arm.

You can buy a torque arm, cross member combo from Spohn for this conversion, I bought just the cross member and am going to make a stock arm work, I will keep you informed on how this works, but no one has actually showed the diff between them, I will get my tranny guy to comment, he loves building the 2004r and also builds the 700 r4s

but as I said I will try and get my tranny guy to chime in
