Re: t5 on a 350 tbi

Moved to the transmission forum.

But... while I'm here, I'd suggest that you do a search. This is a very common topic in which you'll find a lot of opinion.

Generally it's a gamble. Some guys can keep their T5s alive behind stout 350s, other guys destroy them behind stock 305s. So far mine is doing just fine behind my TPI 350, but with a best et of 13.8, my motor isn't exactly a powerhouse.

Re: t5 on a 350 tbi

Blew mine up twice behind the 305. (admittedly, I abused it, banging second gear daily)
When I put the 350 crate motor in, I upgraded to a TKO and never had another transmission problem.

Re: t5 on a 350 tbi

Depends on how you drive. As long as you're off the clutch pedal before you slam on the gas pedal, it'll probably hold up fine.

Re: t5 on a 350 tbi

drive like a human , it will hold up fine if it's in good shape now . a flush & fluid change (i would go to a good synthetic) would be a good idea . drive like an animal , well who knows . good luck .

I've been using the Centerforce Dual Friction since they came out.
Been happy with them.

Re: t5 on a 350 tbi

its the high rpm dumps that kill them and the shift into third usually kills teeth first (although Ive seen it all). if your input is nice and tight you will see alot more abuse. if it has play then kiss the counter shaft good bye! the problem with the t-5 is the input/mainshaft meet and if there is play then it allows the two lift up and away from the countershaft this puts stress on the tops of the gear teeth rather than across much of the teeth face. (you get the idea I think) now third gear is right at this spot where they lift the most and is why you see more t-5's with blown third. but since its lifting any of the gears can do the same.

Axle/Gears: Yup -- they still work
Re: t5 on a 350 tbi

1990 IROC 5.7, 323rwhp, 398rwtq, swapped in a WC T5, no problems with tranny at all

- get a good clutch (don't cheap out on this piece) and balance the flywheel to the clutch & pressure plate
- get a tq arm relocator I got mine from UMI takes the twist off the tranny it is stout unit
- get a poly tranny mount if you relocate the tq arm

I have read of alot of people blowing up T5s, I have heard of alot of blown up T56s too (there is a reason for the T56 rebuild kit...)

It has mostly to do with how you build it and how you drive it

I'm using that clutch behind my T5 also. Beautifully smooth engagement, light pedal effort, and it seems to have no problems holding the mild horsepower that I'm making.
