9 bolt: does a rear wheel bearing get packed with grease like a front?

This may be an obvious question but I've never worked with the rear bearings. Just coat with gear oil or pack with grease like a front?

Long story is that my posi went and I found another 9 bolt that seemed to have a good posi (locked one wheeel and checked torque) but when I got home I realized the brakes on this one are different (I have an 89 GTA) It's disc but the pads ride on the backing plate, so now I have to swap them. Thought I'd do the bearing and seals while I'm at it but I've read that's a big job (requiring griding, using a press, etc..) and the axle didn't seem to leak. I managed to get the axles out- wondering what I need to do before I put them back

thanks,
-Dan

it's very easy and the new bearings come packed with a little grease (timkens) but they are lubed by the axle oil, the packing is jsut so they don't run dry and rust in the package.

All you need to do the seals and bearings is a press and a bearing splitter and a mapp torch to help a hand if it's stuck. It's not that big a job. You already have the axles out.

You could also just leave as is, swap abutments AND!!!!!!!!! the hard line and put it back together. It's so much easier on the 9 bolt than on the 10. No need to even open the diff

Thanks that helps I'll just coat them with axle grease. I'd like to do the seals at least but without the proper tools it seems like a pain (that and I only get about 3 hours/wk to work on it and my other projects) I don't have a press or bearing splitter. It would be nice to be able to rebuild one like you have (I think it was you with all the images of the process)

I did a couple of 9 bolts yes, the one in my 82 trans am last week and I pulled the old one out of my 88 camaro today and sticking another one from an 89 under there w/ pbr brakes,

I hate 10 bolts LOL, they remind me of the eaton stuff in C2/3 corvettes

Re: 9 bolt: does a rear wheel bearing get packed with grease like a front?

I always pack rear wheel bearing on the rear just like front bearing. It doesn't hurt anything and I have seen rear wheel bearings fail because they don't get greased on install and it takes a little while for the gear oil to work its way down the axle shafts and in the meantime there is no lube on the bearings. Sure they may get gear lube before they get damaged but it is cheap insurance.
