New Cheaper sources for 9 bolt borg warner posi cones (and other rebuild parts)
I'm currently in the mist of rebuilding my ailing 9 bolt (posi cones are worn down enough that i cant do anything with them anymore). I also decided at this time it was worth it for me to do a full rebuild as in new bearings EVERYWHERE. So hunting the internet for deals i figured i would compile a list of all the places that i got these parts. These are the CHEAPEST places that i could find. If you find them cheaper my hats off to you!
IWErearendsonly.com-Posi Cones ($125 plus shipping. Call the number and talk to either Colin or Ian). Here is what i received. They are already pre-machined with the correct 'step' so that they fit the stock carrier with no modifications. These are over-sized BRAND NEW posi cones from Australia that this company picked up and brought back to Canada.
Master bearing install kit (timken)- Drivetrainamerica.com ($134.00 plus shipping)
http://www.drivetrainamerica.com/p-1...aring-kit.aspx
Timken axle bearings (set 9) ($17 dollars a piece)-Rockauto.com
rockauto.com
Axle seals. The ones ive found to fit correctly with no issues are both bought from napa. Yes there is a difference between the right and left seal but its mostly in the direction of the lines on the inside of the seal to push the fluid back into the axles. If your seals look VASTLY different then you probably read the "everything i know about 9 bolts" thread and used those part numbers. Those are the numbers that all the books call for but for some reason timken is supplying a seal for the drivers side that WILL NOT fit in the housing. These seals are the ones to get
napa part numbers:
Left 16491
Right 16542
They ran me about 20 bucks a piece.
http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Re...&Dk=1&Dp=3&N=0
T/A performance stud girdle and carrier stud upgrade kit ($149.99+19.99 for the stud kit)
hawksthirdgenparts.com
Hope this helps someone and saves someone some money. The cones fit in my worn carrier AWESOME just in case anyone is curious. There is a ton of space between the end of the cone and the carrier for years and years of trouble free operation im sure.

Did your old posi cones wear into the carrier at all? If so, isn't the carrier pretty much toast after that? I rebuilt my 9 bolt year's and ago and ended up spending enough money to where I should have just went the 4th gen zexel route.

They had just started to eat into but not to the point i think the carrier is junk. If they were really deep grooves yea i would chuck it and find a better one but i think this one will be just fine after seeing how the new posi cones fit in it. As i said in the first post there was a ton of space between the new cones and the carrier. Also the new cones removed all play from the spider gears without me needing to shim between the side gears and the cone.

Thanks for the info, I just ordered a set of these cones from Ian yesterday and am glad I caught them in time as he said he only had a couple of sets left. The price was $175 plus the ride which seemed reasonable.

Also of note for anyone using this as a guide...the pinion seal supplied in the timken master bearing kit was crap and leaked immediately. It was not a timken seal. I ordered the correct seal from Autozone and it was a timken seal.

Lemme know if your guys' IWE cones wear prematurley. Mine only lasted 600miles... And no I did not beat on rear end. Hopefully I just got lucky on that last set and the new ones fair better. They said they have sold about 30 pairs and I am the 1st this has happened to.

Re: New Cheaper sources for 9 bolt borg warner posi cones (and other rebuild parts)
Kinda wondering the same thing. I live in Vancouver where IWE is based out of. I had them replace the carrier, cones and bearings about 2.5/3 years ago. I never put it into the car until last october. Put about 600 miles on it and it was toast already. These were 600 easy miles to because up here in winter is always raining and cold out. Obvs they wouldnt warranty it because it had been so long, but to have it fail so soon... Ian told me that it looked like it had been badly abused and thats why it failed, no other explanation and that these are very delicate rear ends. 600 miles though gimme a break. No huge burnouts or brake stands or anything of the sort, yes i admit i have got the tires spinning a few times but its a L98 motor with 4.11's.... Would love to hear anyone elses opinions on why they would fail so soon. BTW since day 1 I put it it was really noisy and clunky and the limited slip never really seemed to work properly. I Wish I had taken it back to them earlier. Live and learn

Thanks sub roc, I am about to rebuild my 9bolt also. Can you tell me the p/n for the set of 9 axle bearings from rock auto? Also the p/n for the timken pinion seal that you had to get from auto zone. And lastly ...I was going to purchase the ratech p/n 332k from summit racing for everything else and also the gm9-370 ring and pinion is on sale at summit, so I plan to get it also. Thanks again for sharing.

Re: New Cheaper sources for 9 bolt borg warner posi cones (and other rebuild parts)
Did they add shims maybe if they set it up? I set mine up with the IWE cones (which as i understand are just the same things that are sold on 9 bolt.com). I had zero room to add shims to tighten it up it was that tight from the getgo. Im wondering because of this if yours was a carrier that was in better shape than mine, in other words making it too tight to work correctly. Even with no shims and posi additive mine is so tight i can feel it binding a bit once in a blue moon. ive only driven on mine for about 200 miles so far. We will see how it works over the course of the summer. My carrier for comparison was pretty beat but not to the point of trash...yet.

Re: New Cheaper sources for 9 bolt borg warner posi cones (and other rebuild parts)
I just received the cones I ordered from IWE yesterday and after inspecting them noticed that they look just like the OE cones shown in Twin Turbo's pics from other posts about rebuilding the 9 bolt. I also got a reply from 9bolt.com stating that there was an early and a later version of the posi with the ridged version being the early version and later versions having no ridge which is what their cones are apparently made for. Glenn also stated that the early diffs are uncommon at best in Australia as most were sent to the US and that removing the ridge would simply convert an early diff to a later one.

I honestly dont know if they put in shims the last time. Im just looking at the bill from last time all it says is:
Strip + Clean Diff.
Install New Bearings Reseal +
Set up diff with Reb. Posi Trac
On the new bill:
Repair Rear End
Strip + Inspect Rear End
Install + Set Up New Cones In Posi Trac
Assemble + Set Up 4:10 Gears To Achieve Best Possible Contact
Ian told me he will not give me a warranty becuase its a "race car"... (mods in sig). The rear end is still noisy but not "clunky"(yet...), like last time it seems so be locking up when im cornering slow. (sorry if im hijacking this thread, I will make a new one if you guys want)

Re: New Cheaper sources for 9 bolt borg warner posi cones (and other rebuild parts)
I rebuilt my 9 bolt before there were cones available. It was a waste of time and money. I machined the cones myself (not hard)... The posi didn't last too long. I shimmed everything properly as well.
The posi wont engage unless I do a brake stand. So driving around town and trying to slide around turns it won't lock. But at the track, where I warm up the tires first, it kinda locks the rear, and the car launches great.
I can't remember how much I spent rebuilding it. At the time, I wished I had just bought a zexel 4th gen rear with bigger brakes and 3.45's, so it was prob around 2-300.

I wish at this point I had just bought a 12bolt or 9 inch. The amount of money iv wasted on this 9bolt I probly could have had one new for a few hundred $$ more...

It lasted around 1000 miles. Now it will lock up maybe 15% of the time. I plan on building a ford 8.8 next.
