700R4 no 2nd gear

Car: 1969 Chevelle SS 468 ci" 4 speed
Engine: 468ci Big Block
Transmission: Munchie 4 Speed
Axle/Gears: 373 gears
700R4 no 2nd gear

i have a 91 700R4 and there is no 2nd gear it go strait from 1st to third at about 25 to 30 MPH and when i stop it drops back to first if i put it in manual low it freewheels i also have 4th gear so the band is ok.

i have had this transmission rebuilt 4 times and it always loses 2nd gear so something is being overlooked.

What would cause a 700R4 to not have 2nd gear but 1st 3rd and 4th still working?

i have checked the 2-4 servo and dropped the valvebody to check the 1-2 shift valve isnt sticking is there another valve i should be checking to see if its stuck?


PLEASE help im stuck and need a professionals advice i cannot afford to have someone rebuild it so im forced to fix it myself i have an atsg manual and it doesnt have a specific troubleshooting guide for no 2nd gear thanks i will check in every 15 minutes to see the replies as i really need help.

Ive rebuilt a few 700r4's. however i must say that I've never come across one that lost 2nd and be able to skip shift to 3rd. If you were to give it to me to fix, I'd first attach my 300psi Gauge to the MLP port on the side of the trans and check the pressure in Manual first. then of course all the other gears with the car stopped and then operate the 1 to 2nd to 3rd and 4th shifts and down shifts from 4-3, 3-2, 2-1. irregular Pressures in certain areas will lead you to a cause. however its hard telling if you can do this or not. a good Gm Trans book will come in handy.

Have you taken the Valve body apart? The Valve body separator plate is a good place to start sometimes. every time i tear into one i find the ***** have beat the plate causing a lip and sealing the ball(s) to the plate. and one that rebuilt the trans may have over looked it.... Ive seen it happen at backyard shops.....

Hi there,

The 700r4 in my 88 Iroc Lb9 misses second also. It goes 1-3 at medium throttle. At times, it seems like 2nd gear makes an appearance then promptly upshifts back up to 3rd. I've done some research and the only logical explanation is that the servo pin is too short, thus isn't applying the band in 2nd gear. Anyone have any thoughts on this theory? Would installing a corvette servo pin possibly solve this issue?

Hi All
Doing a Search on the Internet about the same issue for my 700R4 Transmission in my 1969 Camaro SSRS 427 BB (343 HP, 483 TQ) and having been a Certified Trans re-builder (in the early 70's, Never worked on a newer Trans, I felt it still has the same operating process as Clutches/ Drums and Bands.
Sorry, It's not Third Gen but the Same Trans I need help with.
I did have 2 IROC 5spd Conv.

The Trans is from a "Performance Mail order shop" & lifetime Warranty, so my first mistake - wished I had just gone to a Local Performance Shop and bought what I needed - My Bad, you don't expect to have to return these.

They want it back and I have to pay shipping. I have about 340 miles on it, few Burn outs but nothing extreme, did buy it to use "mocking up" my Build and had it in the car for about 15 months before I even started the Engine.

In Drive, I feel I can drive from CT to CA, no problems, All Up or Down Shifts are Strong, 1 - 2 is nice, Can drive Thru into 3rd Standing on it.

Go to the Manual side of the Valve Body,
1st is Strong,
2nd is like shifting into Neutral,
Back off and it will up-shift into 3rd and then 4th.

If I down-shift from 4th to 3rd, Nice.
3rd to 2nd, NOTHING
Slow the car down and shift into 1st, will catch and slow the Car down in 1st.

I was told the 2 - 4 Band is active for this, I do not believe it is a Pressure issue from the Pump but a Pressure Supply Issue to the 2 - 4 Band thru the Manual Side of the Valve Body ?

Anyone who has this problem find a solution ?
