What fluids and filter should I purchase 700R4

I plan on replacing the fluid and filter in my 700R4 and also the rear end fluid (posi unit) this weekend. Just replacing as part of maintenance and replace my leaking trans pan gasket.

I plan on dropping the pan, replacing the filter and refilling. I performed a quick search on the forum and didn't find a recent response to my question, hence the thread.

I'd like to find the fluids and filter locally (i.e. O'Reilley's, Advance Auto, NAPA, etc..)

I try to use the WIX filters if available. From the photo it appears to have a cork gasket, any concern(s) with it lasting/leaking?

What fluid type / brand should I seek out?

Is this fine? Castrol Dexron/Mercon Domestic Multi-Vehicle ATF

I don't want to say anything that might start a war so I'll just say what I use.

Wix Filter
Royal Purple ATF.

IIRC, you won't be able to change all the fluid in the trans since some will stay in the Torque Converter/Valve Body. I'd like to get mine flushed, but at $100+ not including the fluids, a quick filter change and top off is enough for now...for me at least.

I don't want to go overkill on the fluid at this time as I don't know the history of the trans, it shifts well so new fluid is in order as I have to drop the pan. I am assuming that anything that lists Dexron III/Mercon is fine?

I did a little reading, others may chime in, and seem to get the same results, Dexron III straight. The Dexron/Mercon is an unlicensed blend that GM doesn't regulate. You'll be fine with Dexron III.

I have been looking around in the stores and haven't seen anything labeled strictly Dexron III. Just bought a 4 qt jug of Valvoline MaxLife Dexron/Mercon fluid, along with a Wix filter and rubber gasket. AND.... some Valvoline High Performance differential oil, for limited slip.

Your choices are fine. Use those with confidence.

I went to Valvoline's web site and pertaining to the gear oil you bought it says this=
( Reduced chattering in limited-slip differential )
That's not very clear in my eyes. Are they saying that they have the equivalent to
4oz of GM limited slip additive ?

That gear oil also lists the GL-5 specification, hence it's persuasion to add it to my shopping basket.

Here is a link to the gear oil I bought. Valvoline® High Performance Gear Oil

The product info states "Valvoline High Performance Gear
Oils meet or exceed API Services GL-5 and GL-4*. The inclusion of Limited Slip Friction Modifier in this product
makes it unnecessary to add additional friction modifier (Ford M2C118A, Chrysler MS-5630, or GM1052358) in
most vehicles."

Re: What fluids and filter should I purchase 700R4

Dextron/Mercon III trans fluid is perfectly fine to run in the 700R4. That's all I use in mine and it shifts fine. GM was originally using the Dextron/Mercon II when they came from the factory. As far as filters go, I always use the factory filter kit. It comes with 2 different pan gaskets for the variations in the flange designs used on the pan.

The Wix kit I bought came with a rubber gasket and worked perfectly. (recommend)

Re: What fluids and filter should I purchase 700R4

I have really been liking dextron 6, It dropped my transmission fluid temp 75 degrees. It costs more but I will pay more now and hopefully extend my vehicles transmission life.
