What parts do I need to swap the Ratio from 2.73 to 3.42?

Hi from Hamburg Germany,

My name is Lars and i am living in Hamburg Germany. My car is a Trans Am with 5 ltr. TPI from 1988 with the following RPO Codes GU2 and G80. I would like to swap the gear ratio from 2.73 to 3.42. What kind of ring and pinion and other parts do I need?

Is it a 10-bolt or a 9-bolt?

Re: What parts do I need to swap the Ratio from 2.73 to 3.42?

You need the thick 3.42 gear set that is made to fit the 2 series differential that you have. The 3.42 is made in the standard thickness for the 3 series and the thick gear for the 2 series. Your 2.73 uses the 2 series differential. You also need a good installation kit. I recommend the installation kits from Tom's Differnetials and Randy's Ring & Pinion. They are the best.

I would recommend checking the axles before you order any parts. Many times the axles in these cars are worn where the bearings run on them. If your axles are worn then you need to replce them along with the bearings. To save on shipping cost it would probably be best to get everything at the same time.

You will also need to install the correct speedo gears in the trans to accommodate the axle ratio change

But most of the shops will not ship to germany. So i have to get most of my parts from shops like summit and rock auto.

Maybe also interesting the car has only 42 tsd. miles and most of the car is in very good condition.

Contact Tom's Differentials and see if he will ship to you. I know that Randy's won't, but Tom might. Also try www.jdrace.com and see if Jim will ship to you. He has the good Yukon installation kits and gears. If I hadn't closed my business last year I would ship them to you. I shipped a lot of parts to Germany and other places all around the world.

Re: What parts do I need to swap the Ratio from 2.73 to 3.42?

So I need the following parts for my 10 bolts rear end.

-Thick Ring & Pinion from Yukon 3.42 for a 26 splines axle with 2 carrier.
-Installation kit
-Correct spedo gears for 3.42

I also found someone who will arrange the shipping to germany.

I would also get the axle bearings and seals, even if the axles are still good. The Yukon installation kit is better than the cheaper kit. It has Timken bearings and the cheaper kit has Koyo bearings.
