tcc dosnt work right if at all

hi, this is my first post here, so i have a 1984 camaro with a 2.8l 2bbl with a 700r4. the problem im having is the tcc usualy never works...when it does its weird.......sometimes it will engage when i accelerate(not heavily) and will disengage when let off to maintain speed. but as soon as i have to brake for any reason it wont work at all for days. other times it will come on in 3rd while accelerating up to 55-60mph then let go and shift to 4th and never turn on again...either situation is when engine/trans is warming up or at least close to operating temp as far as i can tell...outside temp dosnt seem to affect it at all

any help would be great its been like that since i got the car and it driving me nuts, thanks in advance!

Have you checked the operation of the TCC switch on the brake pedal that cuts off the lockup when you brake ?
If it is faulty or out of adjustment then it will affect how (if ) the lockup works
The TCC switch has pink/black and purple wires going to it.

Got a test light or DVM?
With the key on and pedal up you should have 12 volts on the purple wire going out to the trans
With the pedal down should have nothing.

If the switch tests good ,connect a wire to ground through a switch from terminal F on the ALDL connector under the dash and you should be able to get the convertor to lock on demand while driving by turning the switch on.Tests the lockup solenoid operation
( assumes brake switch is working and wiring to / from trans is good. )

Re: tcc dosnt work right if at all

ok, i did both tests...brake switch works fine, but when i tryed to force the tcc to lock up it did nothing...i even jumped the A and F ports on the ALDL with a paperclip. is there any other wires i should check?

Check for 12 V on terminal F ,shows power passing through the trans
If nothing check for 12V on purple at the trans connector (power in )

If you have power at F then the problem is most likely a mechanical one ( faulty solenoid / valve /etc ) rather than a elec one

If you do the lockup test with the car in the air (key on , not running ) you should be able to hear the solenoid engage if you have your ear up by the trans pan

Re: tcc dosnt work right if at all

Run a test light off the wire that goes to the trans. to command lockup.

If it's grounding when it should (or + when it should) then you will be troubleshooting wiring in the trans. There are normally open pressure switches and normally closed ones.

Re: tcc dosnt work right if at all

Naah, just go directly to the 4-pin connector at the trans, unplug it, pull it up to the firewall, keep it off exhaust, test continuity to F at the ALDL so you have the right one. Then set up your test light and see if it's switching / grounding that wire. You can do it with the rear up on jackstands. And it shouldn't do it until speed (~40mph) with stable TCC voltage, and the car up to operating temp (ECM will see a certain temp from the sensor; usually in a head but I'm not sure about a 2.8)

If it's commanding at that connector, troubleshoot the trans. If it's not, then you'll want to see if the ECM is commanding it. If it is, troubleshoot wiring. If it's not, ECM time. Etc. etc.
