shifting between gears?

I think that there is something wrong with my camaro :/!I dont think it should be like that, but you never know.. I need opinions from people..

How fast do you have too go to shift two second, third, fourth, and fifth gear, like saying your racing with friends just for fun.. I always have too shift from first-second like around 15/20mph..second-third 30mph... Third-fourth at 40...fourth-fifth around 50/60.. cuz if I dont shift at that certain speed, the rpms will go all the way to the red numbers like at 60rmps... I don't think its supposed to be like that..

The car is all stock!
Also I almost lost to an S10 "V6"!!STOCK! >:/!

Re: shifting between gears?

You shift up based on what RPM your engine will safely handle, not the road speed
If you are stupid enough to hold the revs until your engine blows up that is your fault

Re: shifting between gears?

These old cars don't have rev limiters as far as I know, at least I haven't found one on mine, but then again I don't push mine past redline.

If your looking at the speedo and shifting your doing it wrong. Every car's shift points will be at different speeds depending on final drive gearing.

When I'm driving spiritedly I usually shift around 3500 or 4000 RPMs, the L03 redlines at 5, but makes no power up high because everything flows like ****, but I have spun mine to 5K without it coming apart, with 192K on the odometer.

Re: shifting between gears?

What do you mean by "...have to shift..."? Why? What rpm do you shift at? Maybe you're just not used to running the engine up to where it should be for max power.

Re: shifting between gears?

the tach is not working the right way, that's why I was asking what speed is the best to shift.

Re: shifting between gears?

First fix the tach. But when to change gears depends on how you are driving. For normal use change up at the lowest speed without bogging the engine. Racing and you'd be changing at much higher revs and speed. Listen to the engine and feel how the car/engine handle the gear.

Re: shifting between gears?

You should be able to shift by ear. You can hear when a gear has reached its limit. Also you can feel when a car has run out of gear.(The car won't go any faster than the gear will allow.) Shift just before that.

Don't look at the tach. look at the road ahead of you and listen and stretch the gear as far as you're comfortable and shift.

Down shifting I would be careful and not be going faster than the gear can handle.

All of that is determined by your gear ratio. 3.42s and you will be reaching a gears full potential much faster. Quick shifts between gears reaching higher RPMs much faster than a lower gear ratio. What gear ratio. doyou have?
