please help!

nwc t5. so im driving got on the highway and all of a sudden I hear this tink, like a rain drop on a tin roof, but louder. more like 1 hail ball on a tin roof kinda. anywas when the sound happened I lost 5th gear. 1-4 and rev still work fine. I lost 5th gear before and when I tore it down, again, I made sure it had the correct snap ring, and I even put the green loc-tite (requires like 5000psi to break or something) and I was very generous with it.

so did I really lose 5th gear again? if so wtf is going on how is 5th gear walking off its spot (breaking the loc-tite and 2 snap rings now)

You know, if it wasn't for the torque arm, shifter position and mount rotation, you'd be prime to put a T4 tailhousing on it.

Lol jmd. Love the pic and humor. Ive always wanted a t56 just lacking the 1500 for everything. Hey ill take that t5 off yours hands haha. But umm i dont think i need the pic as ik what its suppose to look like. But this weekend when i tear it down again ill take pics to show wtf happened.

Really regreting every taking the dam thing apart the 1st down, think i could handle the half full case of fuild and hard to go into 2nd bs this crap now.

So what do i have to look forward to when i take my trans apart? Just the gear outa place? Or is it possable it split in half? And also why is 5th coming off in the 1st place?

ok finally back with pics... no sign of that super Loctite, thinking it melted away. as you can see in the pics 5th gear blows past the snap ring. wtf. all I can say how does 5th gear keep going past the snap ring(and chews it up). well this time I added a 2nd snap ring in the groove past the 1st groove, and now I cant shift into 5th. well I can if I slam it and force it, but then I have to pull hard (and usally into 4th) to get out of 5th gear. im thinking its the extra snap ring. or I messed up the 5th gear shift rod somehow. thoughts?

Yes, I meant the picture as camaraderie; how many people tear down their own manual trans. to fix them?

The mainshaft gear is getting shoved off off somehow. A vibration (perhaps in the countershaft speed gear) would do it. Troubleshooting that could be a PITA; I'd drop a line to someone who is all about the T5.

The stuff I use would go to powder easily if ground up. If 100% intact, it dries to a clear sheet.

Potential problems are the groove in the mainshaft smoothing over (and allowing the ring to walk out) but a normal functional gear relationship and gear-shaft relationship shouldn't walk the driven gear off that quickly. Something is worn. A similar thing happens when the T56 5-6 mainshaft cluster gear gets loose. It will (eventually) walk the reverse synchro right through the lock-ring.

Time to compare your parts to newparts and replace. Or maybe a core for parts.

thanks for the input. im guessing the snap ring groove is smooth but before I took the trans apart the first time 5th stayed on, but had a good amount of free play in the shafts. now that I rebuilt it, and not nearly as much free play (all nice and tight) 5th gear seems to do its own thing. im about to start a new, very good career so im just gona be done with it. in a few months (hopefully) ill be saying hello to a new ls1 and t-56 sell your this t-5 cheap so you can have the headache
