I'm new to this site but not to camaros, I've been searching the past two days and can't seem to find a clear answer. Basically I just bought a 1987 iroc-z Camaro from a guy on craigslist, car ran and drive fine the whole 2 hour ride back, it was having some problems ideling so I replaced the TPS and IACV and that seemed to clear that up however the next day it seemed to not want to shift as easily, having to go into higher rpms to change from 1st to 2nd and then 3rd, but out on the interstate 2 nights ago It never engaged into overdrive. Today on the way home it did once but that was it. It's a 700r4 transmission with only mod known to be a 2500 stall. Most of what I read led me to believe it was the TV cable out of adjustment but I've done that and nothing has changed. Fluid is good and doesn't smell burnt, but in all honesty I'm not very good with transmissions so any help is appreciated!!

check your trouble codes if you are pulling 21/22 then the tps is causing the tourque converter to not lock up, wich although sounds stupid makes it feel kinda like the cars not going into overdrive. also, if you havent already, reset the computer it has a tendancy to get confused when you replace sensors or major parts. test the TC theory by instaling the https://www.thirdgen.org/torqueswitch and turn it on at the OD gearchange or around 40mph if it seems like it bogs a lot staying at 40 then your OD is fine but i dont know much on how to get the computer back in control of the TC if this is the case. thats all the advise I can think of but I am not anywere close to an expert so I dont know how much help I was.

It actually went into overdrive this morning for about 2 miles on the interstate but then dropped back down into 3rd, and yes I am getting the code for my TPS still even though it's set at .54 ohms. But just to make sure it wasn't in overdrive I tried switching from OD to D while driving and there was no change

Ok so this is new.... Now when I'm driving and I let off the gas it sounds like something is spooling up under neath me? Not sure how to describe it but it's not really a whining sound

And I tried that suggestion with wiring up a switch but switch on or off and even tried it with straight wire nothing happened

Quick test for OD.....Drive a steady 40 mph in OD and your tach should read 1000 rpms if the OD is working correctly. Don't need to go on the interstate and guess.

Well it deffinately wasn't working and the interest ate was on my way too and from work so I had to go anyway but thanks!

check that the throttle valve cable isn't binding or the wrong part number.also the wiring connection just above the shifter on the trans could be loose or un plugged

i would check the TV cable first for proper adjustment, then check the connector as Rusty said

Sounds like an issue w/ TPS.It may have a flat spot,bad connection or wire.It may not be reading the same voltage all the time.You stated that the problem started after changing it.Try the old 1 or another 1 to see if it corrects the problem.

Symptoms suggest a stripped/broken sun shell. Especially if we interpret the extended rpm shifting as a 1-3 shift instead, meaning 2nd and OD are inop which is what happens with a sun shell failure. This would also explain the sudden onset of the problem and "spooling" noise also mentioned.

I've got 2nd gear so sunshell should be fine and the tv cable is adjusted properly as verified by my trans guy... Only other thing I can add is that I do have a bouncing idle still occasionally

Ok so I think it's got something to do with the TPS if I unplug it my idle smoothed out and it runs a lot better in general so I got another new one and set it to .54 volts and I'm still having the same result no overdrive!!

Ok got a TPS from the dealer idle is good shifting good but still no overdrive -_- however I did find out that when I'm cruising if I let off the gas it goes into overdrive until I hit the gas again any ideas??

It may be an internal servo seal leak, but I am guessing.

I am having the same exact problem with my 1990 iroc except it goes into overdrive after i let off the gas when the RPMs are getting too high and stays in overdrive.

Yea sounds like your tv cable just needs to be adjusted, mine ended up needing the tranny rebuilt
