t-5 swap into my auto car

I hope someone can help.I swapped a t-5 out of a 91 camaro into my 87 firebird 2.8mpfi.Everything is done.During the swap.I pulled the distributor to replace the o-RING.I also removed the cap to clean up the contacts, they had a lot of carbon on them. Here is the problem. The car will start but it has a bad miss in it.I checked the timing and I have it set at 10 degrees b/4 t.d.c.Someone told me I have to get a computer chip for a 5-speed car but I have not read this anywhere.I am going to get a new cap and rotor button but I do not know if that will help.Anybody know about a CHIP swap? Thanks

Re: t-5 swap into my auto car

Won't help a miss.

It's not "timing".

More likely, you have 2 of the plug wires swapped. I have no clue what the firing order on those even is, so I can't help you by telling you which are most likely to be exchanged; but that's the place to start looking.

Leave the "chip" and "timing" alone until all the cylinders are at least running. Otherwise, you run the risk of doing a bunch of stuff that (a) won't help, and (b) you'll just have to go back and UNdo when you find the REAL problem.

Thanks for your reply.I am sorry that what I failed to mention was that I never removed the plug wires from the cap when I removed it to clean the contacts .2 people have told me to go ahead and replace the cap and rotor button to see if that helps it.I am thinking about going back to my local "pull-a-part" and see if I can get a "chip" out of the car,or a similar car or s-10 with a v-6 where I bought my tranny

Re: t-5 swap into my auto car

The Chip shouldn't affect anything, seeing as the computer controls the T-5 about as much as it controls the 700R4 that you removed. The transmission outputs very little information to the computer, and about the only thing the computer does for the trans is tell it when to lock/unlock the converter. It's very unlikely that a chip out of a 5 speed car would fix this issue, unless your chip is just plain defective.

I'd check to make sure you didn't loosen a wire when you were working on it. Make sure all the wires are snug on the cap & on the plugs.

Is the miss consistent on any particular cylinder, or does it jump around?

thanks for your reply.I talked to HAWKS yesterday and they said the same thing about the chip, that the only thing I might experience is a small decrease in idle rpm.
