Gears from a 4th gen into a 3rd gen rear
I'm looking to put a 3.42 rear in my car, but I want to retain the stock width rear and not have to mess with brakes. Finding a 3rd gen rear with 3.42 near me is close to impossible, plus I'd also like the better zexel torsen posi unit. I'm aware the 3.42 gears out of a 4th gen will not fit in the 2.73 carrier in my car, but I have a 3.23 rear out of my 86 Z28. Will they swap into that? I know I'll also need the updated 28-spline axles, but that isn't a concern of mine.

If you are changing axles, diff (Zexel), and gears it will work in the 2.73 rear.

The rear end housing is not different from one gear ratio to another. It's the differential that is different. If you are installing a 3.42 gear with a 3 series Torsen differential then it will fit in any 7.5 housing.
Just be aware that you must set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash any time you change the gears.

Re: Gears from a 4th gen into a 3rd gen rear
Ok thanks guys, I just wanted to confirm. I'd like to use the rear out of my Z28, because I like to keep everything original to my car. I know my car is nothing special, but that's the way I am. The Z28 is a parts car that's gonna be hitting the scrap yard soon.
I'm not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to rear diffs, as you can probably tell, so I'll most likely have a shop install the gears.
Does this listing look like it has everything needed for the swap(except the axles)?http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-bolt-OEM-Zexel-Torsen-posi-unit-with-3-42-gears-/281371397209?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item41830acc59&vxp=mtr

You also may want to confirm that your car has the 10bolt and not a 9bolt.
