Surface rust on steel in rebuild kit?

I just got my 350 turbo rebuild kit in from summit, b&m kit, and it appears to have surface rust on it. Is this common or is it a defective product?

Re: Surface rust on steel in rebuild kit?

I would say it is not common but not defective either. How many plates are like that?

I'd call Summit and see what they'll do for you.

Unless those plates are of special thickness or made from un-obtainium, etc., it might be cheaper and faster to just order some replacements from Makco.

I don't know if this is an acceptable practice but some real fine steel wool and some clean ATF might remove that if it's only surface corrosion.

Some experts might even say it won't hurt to install them as-is.

This. And if it's just one out of a clutchpack and able to be used as a first or last piece, facing it away from the friction works.

I vote to send it back. I worked for Ceva's (eaton parts for semi truck transmissions) QC department and a number of parts that had came back to be reworked had rust.

IMO, it's much easier to return if it's unopened.
