Hey, I was look'n under the hood of an older Trans Am yesterday & it had like two air cleaners underthere, hooked to the little off-sided T-A scoop. I know I've seen a picture of that motor someplace. Anybody know what it was?

probably was a 305 v8 with the cross-fire injection

yep, that's definately a CFI version of the bird. And i wouldn't doubt if the cowl was function, they were actually listed as being ram air induction instead of cowl induction too, which i thought was strange since the air isn't being rammed in, but instead it's by a vaccuum , or barometric pressure. nehoots. I've seen one of these engines in a camaro, was really neat, and the other thing that was different was that with the engine being stock, yet exaust being replaced with super turbo mufflers and 3" piping, the car sounded like an older muscle car, yet the engine was in a thirdgen, was kinda freaky. Also look for those ummmmm 82-84 corvettes, lots of them had CFI 350's under the hood. And those 84's are really freaky, especially since it's the first year on the newer body style, and that style is usually thought of for fuel injection being that the L98 was started in vettes in 85, but those are the last "freaky double fed" fuel injection cars ever used, basically two opossing carburators feeding the opposite bank of cylinders. The original reason for the CFI idea was to use a setup like the camaro had used in 1969 i believe........the engine was a 302ci chevy block , using two carbs that fed an oppoiste bank of cylinders....cross fire. lol.....neway, bye for now.
i love that hood! it looks slickk! I wonder if i'll be able to hook it up to a LT1 ??? hmm have to do research on that one day.
I want to build up a 85-90 T/A, drop in a LT1, and the only exterior mods would be that hood and some 4th Gen WS6 wheels (and its got to have the Aero Wrap Around Wing!) If i could make that hood functional on the LT1 that would be cool! Since I don't have a TA, i haven't done buckoo research on it yet, but cut me some slack...

The cowl was defiantly functional - but it looked like a V6!.. I didn't get down and count sparkplugs but the way it set way back next to the firewall w/ loads of room in front - smelt V6.
Don't think that the owner would like me shipping you his hood - this was a LIVE car!! I'm thinking 85(it had power windows but a grill instead of Rubber Strips).
Lets just say that the owner wants more than I can pay right now -
So this was a Cross Fire V6?? w/ cowl induction?
the only engine that the Cross fire setup was ever offered on was a v8, and the 305....minus those corvettes like i stated previously. If there was tons of room in the front, maybe some of the accesories were missing, but this was not a v6 car. It would take complete custom fabrication to do a change like that to a v6 car, and no v6 engine (in a thirdgen) needs enough airflow for two opposing throttle bodies. lol. a 4bbl change to an early v6 yes, a basically dual carb version on a 2.8L ..... no, not worth it. The car is most likely a T/A, or it could be a base bird that someone swapped on a t/a styled hood and then changed the induction system to the CFI version instead ofa 305 carbed. So, check that out. Also it'd be an 82-84 car allso, and probably therefore and 83 because of the CFI, the 85+ cars recieved Gfx on T/A's, and they also had a later modeled hood. earlier f-bodies were equipped with those original styled grill front ends.
If it was a v8 you would know it, I think it's a TTA with the 3.8L with some custom or aftermarket air cleaners, to bad you don't have a picture of it, would be cool to see.

just doesn't sound quite like a TTA to me, waaaaaaay to old to be, and if it was, i don't know why someone would go into the trobule of pulling off all the old TTA parts and replacing them with an 82-84 front clip and hood, just doesn't make sense, unless they were out to destroy the resale of the car. Found an engine pic here, this should be what you saw underneith, maybe the guy had removed the air cleaner cover bracket, in which case you would have seen both aircleaners sitting side by side instead of being under the cover, although you can see the cover exiting towards the rear of the hood and to the cowl. Also, looks like there could be al ittle bit of room infront of that motor, huh, who knows. tell me what you think.
You are correct Sir!!
That is the engine I saw under that cowl. I also found a pix on page 4-35 of the Chilton's manual (I Knew I'd seen it somplace!)
Pix sez, 'F' series 5.0L - So it was the 305. Must 'a been an OPTICAL DELUSION.
Thanks - that kind'a thing buggs the crapp out'a me when I can't place it.
so that's what crossfire injection motor looks like. interesting. The car has to an 82-84, 85 & up do not have those "grills". I've seen an 84 SE 6cyl in Jamestown. beige like mine, had the "grills" & the carbed intake.
have never heard anywhere or seen two throttle bodies on a 2.8L, no need for them on such a small engine. But, there might have a 2 barrel carberator....that'd be more understandable if the truck has a 2.8L v6 in it. But never heard of , seen, or even had a glempse of a 2.8L equipped with dual TB's.
Let me confuse the issue here - I did see a twin throttle body V6 at a junkyard once, the guy said he'd taken it in as a core (he rebuilt engines). Thats why I thought the 305 might have been a 6; I DID count spark plugs on that one. It said VORTEC on the valve cover. I think those are 90degree motors - 4.3?
I ask how much he wanted for a rebuilt (he said 850). Then he turned pale & said you can't put one of those in a Firebird - - You'd HAVE TO CHANGE THE WIRING HARNESS & EVERYTHING!!
I found the functional scoop hood in a junkyard once.. those hoods are rare; if you can get them and the air cleaner assembly and all the hood solenoids/wiring, sell the package on ebay!!
