RBob told us a while ago (do a !) that the bulb circuit is also controlled by the 700r4's TCC signal. If a bulb is placed in there, it will light every time the TCC engages. The light is shown in the owner's manual. Don't you guys buy owners manuals for your cars? http://www.helminc.com First purchase I ever made was the shop manual and owner's manual. I bought the Haynes manual a few months later.
And yes, it's a TH-700r4. I doubt our v6's could spin a TH400 very well!

My shift light comes on when I press the accelerator in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears and then goes out when I let of the throttle. It is really annoying because it never came on before and ever since my shifter broke, it suddenly came on. The light is useless. I want to get rid of the light but I can't figure out which bulb to take out.

When I had my 87 firebird with the auto someone had wired in the shift light for it. I would be driving along, and it would pop up at like 2500, then shift. Don't know anyone would do it that way, or set it up. But hey if its there, you might as well have it work, even if it is useless for the auto...

It may be for a 5speed, but I have it in my auto and it is driving me crazy. I don't want to see any lights come on while I am driving.
Could someone pleeeaaaaaaaase tell me where this socket is.
There are like 12 bulbs back there, and I have no idea which one it is.

for starters i dont know why that light is even coming on in an auto but if it bothers you so much take the cluster out and pop the bulb out of the shifter light socker

I would do that except for one minor problem, I don't know which socket it is.

i removed my guage cluste panel and looked and i don't have bulbs for my upshift light, water level, or engine temp. I think those are the names, but anyways i've got a 5 speed. u dont need engine temp b/c you've already got a guage for that and most people dont want an upshift light b/c they like to shift when they want. and water level isn't really necessary b/c if u had no water obviosly ur engine temp would increase.

Re: up shift light
I have a 88 Firebird with a 5-speed BW tranny and I barely learned about the shift light. I want it to work but it doesn't.
If its not to late the for those who want to take the bulb out its not hard to find. Just do a lil trial and error by taking some of the bulbs off and pop the console on with the key on to see if it lights up. No harm in trying thats what I did it only takes less than 20 minutes.

Re: up shift light
I think they made those all the same to be universal between manual and auto cars.
To take out the light you have to take off all the torx screws for the bezel and then there are two 10mm nuts at each bottom corner of the gauge cluster and you also have to take of the 6 or 5.5 mm screws around the cluster and pull the cluster out.
Then you unscrew the socket from the printed circuit on the back. its kind of easy.
If you have something that can reach into the little area where the light is without breaking the light. The bulb just pops out of the socket. Otherwise you have to take the cluster out.
