He might not be able to, I can't just get a belt to skip the smog pump on my car because it goes from the smog pump to the water pump, not the crank.

could just be my car, but it goes around the alt, around the smog pump, to the water, then the crank and around. I just took my smog pump off, cut out everything from inside of it and put it back on, it's only like 2 fins you need cut out. Still causes a drain on the system but it doesn't make the annoying scraping sound anymore.

Here, route it like this. This is the factory "delete" of the smog pump. They removed it entirely on the '87's because they were burning efficiant enough not to have to have them. The factory just put on a smaller belt and routed them like so

Some 3.1s had an idler pulley in the general location of where the smog pump would be. Its by no means necessary, but on Redraif's car we had a fair amount of movement/whipping in the belt without it (her car didn't come with a smog pump, since its an 87), so we added one.

Also had a hard time getting the right size belts at the parts stores for the smog delete option! Usually had to get one and it would fit for a bit and stretch just slightly and start squealing and flapping!

heres what i did for the delete and an underdrive pulley. it still took a bit of trial and error but. took a piece of rope, ran it around the routing of the belt, measured it and subtracted about an inch and a half for the tensioner. ill check the belt part number when i get home, but i think it was around 73 inches

Well I was running the underdrive pulleys w/o the pulley and that was part of why I had so many belt issues!

We had to do the same thing to get a decent belt...rope trick is the best way! Everything runs so much better with the idle pulley though!

I got an idle pully, when I replaced the belt for the underdrive pully it came down to trying them on in the parking lot of the parts store.

See the replys above!
I see no big deal except hearing that noise.
The HP loss is if any so small.
PS Those internal fins looked pretty easy to remove from the smog pump housing.

You might get lucky, but chances are you will have to play around with belts a bit the first time then just write the correct size in you service manual for future reference...thats what i did!

Ked you can't just take those fins out, I had to cut them in half with a dremel to get it out.
