i was wondering if anyone has done a 3800 swap into there car or knows what transmission bolt pattern they carry. i cant seem to get a straight answer from the guys at 3800pro.com
Originally posted by drdave88 i thought i remembered project saying he needs to use the trans off the 3800 because of the PCM and the 60 degree wont bolt up, but i may be wrong.
I just said its the same and will bolt up, which part is so hard to understand ?
wow, someone is a d!ckead tonight. to anyone else on this website, z28 ***** is *** and knows all, we are not allowed to be wrong at any point. a simple "no youre wrong" or something would have sufficed, not being a jackass. and thats why i even stated i may be wrong. people like you make this site annoying.
And again now TWO are wrong, and more stupidity is being spread, and drdave, I shouldnt have needed to say you were wrong in my second post, after I posted the correct information you posted info contrary to the facts arguing the truth, which causes confusion.
Whether anyone around here likes it or not the 3800 Series II has the same bellhousing flange as the 60* V6.
John you want to argue this fact bring a big fat wad of cash, come down to tampa with a 2.8 bellhousing, i've got 4 3800's sitting here.....
The 2.8/3.1/3.4/3.4 DOHC/later 3800/cadillac FWD 4.1/4.5/ and 4.9 non-northstar all have the same bellhousing pattern. The narrow one. I have a 3.8 SC bolted to a 4x4 2.8 S10 700r4 in my garage as we speak(to replace my 3.4). I helped put a 4.9 cadillac into a fiero that had a 2.8 as well.
I also know where a supercharged 3800 is in an Astro. The 2.8 700r4 was built to V8 specs and put in. Some custom motor mounts, custom intake, rewiring, some more, and custom exhaust. For being a V6 in a 4,500 lbs brick, it has some major balls and still gets over 20 MPG average.
EDIT- I am talking about the FWD 3800 vs. the 2.8 etc. The early model RWD 3.8 had a BOPC(Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Cadillac)bellhousing pattern. I am not sure on the later model RWD 3800(although I wouldn't think GM would build 2 different blocks). The FWD 3800 has better heads and makes more stock HP though.
The 3.8 RWD is a BOP pattern. The FWD I can't comment on - but z28, *IF* the FWD 3.8 is a 60º bolt pattern, then please post some pics of it. That could be valuable knowledge. I invite you to not be a dick about it, and provide some pics I don't KNOW that the FWD blocks have a different bellhousing, but when I was running around with my 354 '77 Firebird, I got my TH350 from a guy that had it bolted to a early 3.8, and yes - it was a BOP bolt pattern. THAT is my experience with the 3.8 Didn't realize GM decided to move to the 60º bolt pattern with the FWD setup.

*grins* That fat wad of cash would likely be in ones, and would be used to gas to get there from Gainesville
BTW, I don't usually read all the posts in a thread. If it's something I feel might not be 'common knowledge' then I'll post my EXPERIENCE with it.
ok well im gonna go by the pictures and assume that its a 2.8 style bolt pattern. what i want to do is pull my 236,716 mile 2.8 out and drop in a 3800. i would like to do the supercharged version but id have to figure out how to make the intake clear the firewall considering the supercharger sucks air from the rear of it.
And on another note Z28***** you said you have a few 3800 lying around, would you happen to have one with the computer and wiring harness. and if you would you want to part ways with one?
John the question was about the 3800, not the earlier bop 3.8's which were similar to the GN motors. Both of them (fwd and rwd) as I stated before use the same bellhousing as the 60* V6's, the 4.3 is off on its own with having the chevy SBC pattern, course that might have something to do with it being 3/4'ths of a 350 huh ?
I wasnt being a dick until people want to post information contrary to the facts that I already posted. It does nothing more than spread extra confusion and make it harder to solve the original persons question because they are now confused by people who dont know what they're talking about.
TTA83: yes, PM me if you would like more info please.
Just some more useless facts, the early 3.8 had the bop bolt as it was built like the 4.3, the 3.8 is just a scaled down Buick 350 so GM could re-use parts.

not to start anything more, but i wasnt trying to spread anymore confusion, i was just saying i thought i read that they were different, thats why i said i may be wrong. and i apologize about my comments to z28, i hate taking my day out on someone else, no hard feelings man?
holy crap, I go on a 4day weekend and all this thread happens
fwiw, the fwd & rwd series II 3800's use the same block. That mean sif your GP L36 bites the big one, you cain raid a comero/Firebird l36 & jsut swap over parts. most notably being the intake/exhaust manifolds & oil filter adaptor.
fwiw.

No hard feelins, I just pop a blood vessel or two when I have to battle to make sure someone gets the correct info.
also, snag an l67, modify the firewall, slap on 5sp, have at it.
having taken the dash off twice now, if you ditch the hvac ducking, or at least modify it (slightly ) you can route teh intake ducting to tb.

I removed allot of hvac stuff and also had to notch the gauge cluster to get some decent 6x9s in the dash. But that would be a good place for the intake hoses. Filter uder the dash squashed up against an AC vent. Talk about cold air.............

Wonder how much of a boost loss you'd see with the windows up, would get awfully noisy in the car too.

that freakin hilarious
although, maybe duct the a/c vents to it ( nudge nudge ) or plumb it to where the fresh air enters underneath the dash take advantage of that cowl induction there

Ya think it would suck [air] that bad? I know on max AC it closes off the fresh air vents. I guess you could open them up. But in a climate where you need AC the car might enjoy some too.
Could the colder charge negate to power needed to run the AC?
Instead of 80-90f air, you get 60f?
I don't have AC.
