I paid the extra $100 or whatever it was for the coated ones, mainly because I didn't feel like messing with sandblasting and repainting only to have them eventually get rusty looking anyway.
That, and I was about to leave for Iraq, so I figured what the heck.
Can anyone give me a part number for gaskets for these things? I have the worst luck with leaking header gaskets. I am not sure if it is because I have not retightened them when hot or what. As many times as I have had to put new gaskets in I really feel like throwing the stock pipes back on. It's really annoying.
Go down to your local VW performance shop and get some 1 1/2" very god quality perfomance VW exhaust gaskets. They are singles so you will need 6 of them of course. They work great and are heavy duty for racing VW engines. Don't get stock VW gaskets, they are a smaller 1 3/8" port and are cheaper made material like the Pacesetter gaskets. I posted this info a few yeears back, I will search for pics if they are still around on this site.
My problem is I don't know what I am asking for if I go to a VW shop. Like if someone had a part number or something that would help. I just wish Pacesetter would have joined up with a good gasket manufacturer and charged me for good gaskets. I called up SCE copper gaskets and they could make me some awesome ones but also cost a fortune. I am guessing not a whole lot of people have had issues with the headers sealing. Odd thing for me is it has only leaked mainly on the passenger's side head.
I got bad leaks too. The felpro gaskets never sealed right for me. Not to mention that I got a broken bolt that didn't leak until I put the headers on. I heard that Fiero gaskets worked really well because they have a metal ring on the port. I am goin to put those on this weekend with alot of copper RTV silicone, especially around where the broken bolt is. I don't really want to pull the head off and fix it, I'll get to a show soon over the summer. BTW is it true that leaks can cook the head gaskets? and do these cause idle problems?
Sorry to open up this old post but i am having some problems since I put my pacesetter headers on. Stuff like bouncing idle and running rich. Anyone else have these problems and if so, how to fix? I have thought about wrapping headers to help O2 sensor since my headers are not coated.
dont wrap the headers, they make them rust out and fail faster, instead get urself a 3 wire o2 sensor they are around 40-55$'s,same price as the header wrap would cost you,
You are running richer because thats what headers do. That is a normal side effect.
Also, pacesetter told me that it would void the warranty if you wrapped your headers.
u know ive heard ppl say this, and i just dont understand why,ur not changing anythign fueling wise,just getting more of the burnt gasses out,this should not make u run rich

A switched 12v source, might I add. You don't want the sensor hot when you start the engine.
ye su deff want switched 12 volts, i have my o2 and fan on there own relays that i control with a toggle switch inside the car,ive had that switch on to warm the o2 up before starting the car,it dosent do anything bad.
Basically you need someone to reprogram your ecu. The ecu is still sending out the stock fuelsetting and what not. I know with my car with headers and cold air intake I am running a little on the lean side. Try putting some fuel injector cleaner into you gas tank and put new spark plugs in and check you cap and rotor. The idle problem could be from you ignition system.

I dunno, but this is the 3rd car Ive had with headers. They all ran rich(tell this one because I edited the pcm). Also, back before the pacesetters were made and someone else here was making them(forget who). They tested them and found rich. Also, on the PCM board I attend, they all have to remove a hair of fuel after header install.
I just know what I have experienced, and what I read.
My guess is that since the exhaust runs cooler with headers less unburnt fuel is burned in the pipes giving it a richer reading. This is where an egt sensor would come in handy.
