Hello. I bought a 1983 3.8L V6 Buick motor/ TH200 tranny yesterday. The motor is (I believe) a stock H/O motor...It is a factory 4 barrel motor. Alrightey...lotsa questions...
1.) Can I install a turbo kit on that?
*And if so, do they make a whole kit for it?
2.) Any suggestions on where to get all the parts?
3.) I have to pull the heads anyway to change the head gaskets, so is there anything INTERNAL that I have to do to the motor to handle boost?
4.) Like I said, it has a 4 barrel carburetor and stock intake manifold...Will I have to change the intake and/or carb?
Any help is greatly appreciated...as I am new to the turbo game!!
THANKS!
-Rick
It's gonna be a custom application...I am taking the inline 6 out of my '64 Chevy Nova Wagon and putting the Buick 3.8 V6 in...But I want to turbo it...I don't need it to be a race car, but I want it a little quicker than it is now!
if your gonna go through the trouble of swapping a completly different motor, make it somthing worth it, that motor is the definition of a "dog". if it was a fuel injected 3.8, maybe then it MIGHT be worth it, Im not trying to hate on your idea, just giving you my opinion

ok, i know this is the lat hting you want to hear after purchasing an engine, but why not put a smallblock in? you could spend the same money turbo-ing that and end up with much more power. plus the parts to build up an SBC are readaly available, not to mention the fact that the SBC will fit right into your nova, since it was ment to go in there.
infact the only advantages i can see to a 3.8v6 is fuel economy, weight and the unique factor.
no matter what you choose to do with it i think it will kick ***. you may find more info on doing this type of thing over at TurboBuicks.com - TurboCharged Message Board Turbo Buick Grand National, T-Type, Turbo TransAm . they have a whole section for giving other cars buick power, just like our "engine swap" board. they will have more info for you. on this site ther eare only a couple hundred users with buick power, and of those only a handfull put the engine in themselves, most purchased the car that way (1989TTA). goodluck with your swap.

my opinion is to get an 87 grand national motor because its good on gas and runs fast.my bro has a grand national and he beats mustangs like nothing
Yes, but first off, his was designed to be in that vehicle which is uni-body construction and lighter than the Nova we're talking about installing it into.
Second, his GN is Sequential Fuel Injection AND Distributor-less Ignition, the carb'd version won't get nearly the gas milage or the power that the GN is capable of without A LOT more money invested.
Is it possible??? Yes.
In reality, is it easable on a budget??? No.

GN's arent uni-body cars they are full framae ( heavy ) cars . 3,500lbs
and those 2004R's can be made to take alot of torque in heavy cars all my 200 has a NAPA rebuild kit and a billet servo and it has alot of high 1.50 low 1.60 60fts and higway miles

Ok, that's my bad, but still, you're looking at Sequential Fuel injection with DIS ignition vs. and older carb and HEI application, we're not talking apples and apples here.
