getting 6-8 mpg on a good day, barely running. exhaust smells rich, which is the only thing i can see that would explain the mileage. checked the chilton, gave me the 'factory settings are set and sealed, you should only have it adjusted by an authorized chevy dealer' bull... basically 'even if it breaks you shouldnt fix it yourself'
sick of the mileage and high gas prices, how do i lean it out?
There should be a guide in the chiltons to cut the carborator to get access to the richness knob. You may look up stuff in http://www.s-series.org/ as the carbed 2.8 was more common in the S10 trucks. The knob is buried under the front of the carb. That and a rebuild might help you out. However, the 2bbl rochester carb is kinda crap. Either they run good, or bad. No middle.
Then try to get to that screw. Sounds like your best bet. If I recall, you have to take the carb off and then chew out the metal that covers it. My brother had a carb in his s10 with the mod done. He could adjust it with some plyers.
How's the exhaust? Cat plugged? check....
How's the ignition? Big HEI? how's the coil? How's the ground strap? How's that damned carbon button in the middle? How is your cap/rotor? How's your pickup coil (i've seen a lot of these go bad on older 2.8s)? How are your plugs/wires? check...
The thing about those vari-jet carbs is that they are also prone to failure at the mixture control solenoid. It doesn't sound like you are having huge emmision testing issues yet so you may want to get an older one that is mechanical and swap it on. You can get them for the 4.1 chevy in-line six for the 1980 pickup. There are other older GM applications as well that are not computer controlled.
Just a few ideas...

I want to be putting any money i have into my v8, and i was looking for a jerryrig type thing. it passes emissions fine, cat was brand new last summer. if something goes on the bracket right forward of the coil, it's all gone. there is no plug for the o2 sensor to plug into, so im guessing something goes there. if you don't mind, blue, i'd like to get a couple pictures or something and talk to your brother about how he did it, if it wouldn't be to much trouble.
Yeah, I was going to buy a timing light this weekend because it's idling horribly rough and it didn't before I replaced the valve cover gaskets, so maybe I bumped the dist getting them off.
