2.8 pulley question?

Ok i have a 86 Camaro. I have a motor out of a 87. To what i can tell the 87 motor came with a supertine belt system where as the 86 had V-belts and the supertine belt. I have all the pullys for the 86 but the crank pulley. Its the only one for the 87 Cause it came with the motor. Should i try and get all the pullyes for a 87. But if i do that the Ac powrer steering will have to go to the supertine belt. They are right now the v-belt. Any ideas on what i should do.

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

Stick with the '86 setup, I believe the serpentine setups had a different water pump which means replacing the front cover and the water pump along with the pulleys, belts, tensioner and whatever else you'll need.

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

I'd find a crank pulley for an 86 engine and then run a new 86 water pump. I'm pretty sure the timing cover and everything else is the same except the water pump.

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

I just pulled a 2.8 V6 out of an 85 Berlinetta. The motor has been pretty stripped of it's parts - but the Water pump pulley and the crank pulley are still bolted to it. It's the factory V-Belt set-up.

If you want these pulleys let me know - you can have them cheap.

I can probably put together a full serp set-up too - but that would cost more. It's up to you.

Maybe it's just the '85s, I replaced my water pump a while back and had to take the replacement back because it was a different design.

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

I'm pretty sure you just have to switch the water pump because the newer serpentine pumps are made to run backwards. I put a 90 3.1 from a firebird into an older S-10 and we ran the S-10 v-belt pump... I'm sure we did it that way...

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

I am guess that the engine is a 87. I know the pulley for the water pump has a place for 2 Vbelts and one supertine belt. Is that right?? It came of the 86 engine that was in the car.

The water pump is still there as well. I'll see about getting some pictures and quotes for you.

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

To use the other rotation water pump you also need to swap the front/timing cover. The water passages in the timing cover are need to match the pump being used.

Swapping from a forward rotation pump to a reverse rotation pump requires swapping the front cover and oil pan in addition to the pump itself. The oil pan needs to be swapped, because the flange at the front of the oil pan changes between them.

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

I have both water pumps and they looklike each other. I know the 86 pump want on on the front cover for the 87 motor. So i guess i need to chang oil pan and front covers now so i can use the 86 pulleys V8 motor are so much easyer to work on.

Re: 2.8 pulley question?

I took the drive to the block today and took some pics:

I'm looking to get $15 for just the 2 pulleys,..... or $25 for the pulleys Water Pump and all the hardware - everything in the second picture. Shipping should only be $11.50 for Priority Mail (insured) Flat rate shipping.

These parts were removed from an 85 2.8 V6 engine. There is no type of tensioner in this system. I believe that the larger belt was used for the Alternator for a couple of years - but it's not a serp belt.

I gotta go,..... It's time to eat ! Let me know if your interested !
