Hey guys....i am new to this site, and just bought my first Camaro. I picked up an 85 2.8mpfi v6. I got it for $350 under the pretense that it only needed a fuel pump. (Of course i knew this was a gamble, but the body and interior are almost perfect.....no rips or tears inside, no dents or dings outside....could use a coat of new paint tho). Every thing on this car is original as far as i can tell, and i couldn't let such a beautiful, well kept car go to the crusher. I brought her home and immediately put her up on ramps, dropped the tank and put in a new fuel pump. HUGE pain in the neck.....but that fact is well documented. To my surprise she started right up, no problem idling even after a bottle of fuel system cleaner. Of course i instantly heard a knocking and squealing out of one of the cylinders which my mechanic said probably wouldn't even get back to my house (2blocks lol) with out throwing a rod. After spending DAYS on this site (which was very helpful btw) i decided i should probably go for a 3.4 instead of another 2.8 to get alittle extra performance out of a 6cyl. I have a couple of grand to spend on this car, but it is the only car i have right now so i need to get in running SOON!!!!!!! (i would rather spend a couple of hundred more bucks and get a warrantied engine that i dont have to put together my self and take a month and a half to get it put together correctly.)
Now i have seen swaps on here for hybrids, low/top ends etc.. I'm confident in my ability to do one of these swaps correctly.....but i know it would take me forever to get it right, and time is a big factor to me. (I'm a smart guy, good with my hands, but FAR from a mechanic!!)
I haven't found a complete swap to a 3.4 crate on here.....or for putting a complete fourth gen motor in. I assume there is a reason for this??? It definitely sounds quicker and easier to drop in a brand new motor that is under warranty with zero miles on it that doesn't seem too need too much modification to line up correctly.
So if any of you guys who have done this swap or know anything about it or have any details......or hell even ACTUALLY driven your camaro.....your input on this would be greatly appreciated
The reason you won't find a 3.4L crate motor is that the 3.4 came only in the early 4th gens, which used SFI for the injection method, while ours uses MPFI. The best you can hope for is to buy an engine and swap the intake/fuel/pulleys over to the crate motor.
so...there is NO WAY to change my mpfi set up to spi?? (different ecm or a custom chip or anything??) the product website states it is possible simply by keeping the 2.8 timing cover, and getting a custom chip. (and no i don't believe everything i read on the internet!!) If that is NOT the case then i will drop in another 2.8 and then rebuild to a 3.4 when i get the time.......but i sure would love to find a way to drop a 3.4 in without having to do this project twice....like i said this is my only car so i need it RUNNING...... even if i do have to keep the little ol' 2.8
The 3.4 will bolt in just the same as a 2.8. Get a longblock and use your manifolds, distributor (in place of the oil pump drive), and timing set/covers are the same between the two engines.
Your ECM and injectors will work fine, but may want to bump up the fuel pressure a little to compensate for the larger displacement. This can be done by using a Holley AFPR for the TPI's, bolts right in.
You don't need to change the fuel pressure. Won't hurt, but not neccecary. As soon as it gets into closed loop the ecm will correct the afr. You'll probably be making close to 160hp with the 3.4 block which is safe with the stock injectors.
So if any of you guys who have done this swap or know anything about it or have any details......or hell even ACTUALLY driven your camaro.....your input on this would be greatly appreciated

People have had fueling problems when doing a 2.8-3.4 swap. I say at the least to use 3.1 injectors.
Look for the username Coolrimsatleast, he did a 2.8-3.4 swap and made several threads about it (including the fueling issues).
My swap went well didn't change anything but the top end. They guy I got it from gave me everything from top to bottom. The only issue I have is when the car is cold it runs rich till it warms up and then it mellows out. The way I can tell is you can smell it and then it goes away after 5 mins. So it is a wise choice you can really tell the difference in power.

You will need to get some 17lb injectors. You could atleast start it on your 2.8 injectors, but it will run lean. I belive I have 2 sets of 17lb, and a set of 19lb injectors I need to get rid of(hint hint).
edit3rd time. Also, your 2.8 is externally balanced. You will have to get a flywheel or flexplate from a 3.1 or 3.4 if that crate motor doesnt come with one. I may have a flexplate as well. (I keep finding spare parts from when I had a v6)

I needed that. I am going the 3.4 route over the summer. I still have some stuff that I don't know/need.
Ive asked for that thread to be a sticky. As you see it hasnt.
If everyone would keep posting the 3.4 questions in it, it would either stay up top, or be made sticky.
It seems that the mods for the forum are either lacking or slacking. There's a lot that should be moderated (cleaned up, locked, stickied unstickied (sic), etc).
At one time I was asked by a previous mod if I was interested, but nothing ever came of it.
