Freeze plug miss-match?

Hi Guy’s,

Ok so I’ve got my engine out, given it a good de grease and stripped off the oil filter housing and both engine mounts to get a good clear shot at the freeze plugs. Getting them out was a real pain but I finally managed it, but I now find that the replacement Dorman brass plugs don’t fit! It says on the package they are for Gm/Chrysler V6 (173 CID and V6 3.1 CID – T) applications but the plugs I’ve taken out were about 35mm in diameter (about the same as the plug hole in the block) but these new plugs are 38mm! If you put one over the other they are visibly different. I know they should be a little bigger than the hole, but these plugs just won’t go in! I’ve hit them with a socket with a diameter just under that of the plugs but they’re not even close to going in. The plugs I’ve taken out are steel ones and much deeper than the shallow Dorman ones, do I have the right plugs?

Speed.

Which Dorman kit do you have? It should be a 567-048.

Re: Freeze plug miss-match?

That's a single 1 1/2" brass plug? The number I gave you should be for an entire kit.

Re: Freeze plug miss-match?

Yep, I got (6) 1-1/2'' brass plugs, (1) 15/16'' brass plug and (2) 3/8'' steel pipe plugs. The only numbers I have are on the brass plugs themselves (656-077) and a number on the plastic container (02633) nothing else.

Speed.
