zero lash is where the pushrod does not move up and down. you can feel slight drag when turning the push rod.

i personally keep turning the pushrod untill it starts to drag as your tightening up the rocker, that will mean there should be no up down movement, then apply 1/2 turn extra tightening the rocker down.
i take it haynes gives you the order in which ones to tighten whilst no.1 is TDC and so on.

Hand crank the engine until the mark on the damper is aligned with TDC mark (No. 1 cylinder firing position). Once the engine is properly rotated and you're sure that the number 1 cylinder is in firing position, adjust these valves: Exhaust - 1,2,3; Intake - 1,5,6. To adjust the valves, back off the adjusting nut until lash is felt at the push rod, then tighten the adjusting nut until all lash is removed. You can do this by rotating the push rod while tightening the adjusting nut. When all lash has been eliminated, turn the adjusting nut an additional 1 and a half turns.

Crank the engine one revolution until the mark on the damper and TDC mark line up again. The engine should be in the No. 4 cylinder firing position. Now you can adjust the following valves: Exhaust - 4,5,6; Intake - 2,3,4. When your finished, start up the engine and set the timing & idle speed
