carb on a 3.1L

I was wandering if anyone has tried machining the top out of the intake manifold and putting a carb on it. it seems like it would work, but i don't know. I was thinking you could just unplug all the injectors and re-route the the fuel line to the carb. the only thing it should do wrong is possibly just throw a ckeck engine light. will that alter the ignition curve? any suggestions?

Re: carb on a 3.1L

You could just buy the carb intake from Edelbrock

Re: carb on a 3.1L

82-85 is just the carbed version of the 2.8, those years all the 2.8s came stock with a carb set up. getting one of those out of an s10 would be pretty easy. I would suggest a vacuum advance distributer to go with it. you can get those off of a carb 2.8 also. basically just get a carbed stock top end from a camaro or s10.

Re: carb on a 3.1L

if you have a 700r4 with a lock up converter you may need this

TCI 2004R/700R4 Lock-Up Wiring Kits
Torque Converter Lockup Kit, Wiring Kit, Vacuum Switch, GM, 700R4, Kit

yes it will. but its not as easy as just hooking it up and going...there are other things you need to do/change to get it to work right. Ive not really looked into the carb swap so I don't know much about it...do a search, there are a couple semi-recent threads about this.
Maybe more people will chime in and help you out.

Re: carb on a 3.1L

ok kool. about the lockup kit. i have the stock trans. in my car and i have a TCI 3200 stall converter. it looks like that kit has a wiring harness. i thought that GM didn't start the electronic hook-ups until 93'? I think the only one mine has is the reverse light switch. idk. and do ya'll think that if i leave the ecu in there to control the ignition, that the (possible) trouble codes will affect the ign. timing?

Re: carb on a 3.1L

Quick question, if you swap the 3.1 along with the matching transmission would you still have to buy the lock up kit?

Re: carb on a 3.1L

This is a really old thread. Are you going to be using a carb or fuel injection? If fuel injection both 2.8's and 3.1's with mpfi have a 700r4 and you do not need any lock up kit if it's carb'd then you would need the lock up kit for the 700r4.

Re: carb on a 3.1L

Thnx for the answer! didn't think i would get a response. I'm gonna stick with the stock carb for the time being. my car came stock with a 700r4, I had heard that the early 700r4s' had alot of problems that would later be resolved in the newer models and thought i could upgrade instead of rebuilding the old one. didn't know if i had to get the lock-up kit 4 it.
