hey i got a quik question. well since we got a 3.1 should we still use the 2.8 L intake manafold on our 3.1? also should we use the injecters from the 2.8? every thing looks so much the same.
You should be able to just drop it in and run it as long as all your sensors are the same because the only difference is one is a 2.8 and the other is 3.1 all the parts interchange .
You're going to have to use the upper plenum and TB from your 2.8 on that 3.1, and you're going to probably want to swap over your oil filter adapter since the 3.1 has a 3-wire oil pressure sensor and the 2.8 has 2 different ones that do the same job the 3-wire unit does. Unless, of course, you want to go and rewire everything (very expensive now, even off of eBay). Don't swap over the cold start injector in the back of the manifold as you don't need it, and you'll be stuck with it when you put it in unless you can get your hands on a plug for the intake hole.
I'd keep the 2.8 injectors handy, just in case, and since they do flow slightly better than the 3.1s do (up to the use of the 3100 in all FWD cars the injectors were actually smaller than those from the 2.8, 15.4# for the 2.8, 14.7# 3.1, and 18.6# for the 3.4/3100, not that you needed to know that).
:edit: AND DON'T FORGET TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP! Or you could end up doing it anyways in 3 months! Also swap over your EGR system and possibly the passenger's side exhaust manifold if you can get it off of the old engine without breaking too many bolts, as you don't want to be stuck with the AIR system's check valve getting in the way of everything and possibly causing a vacuum leak (unless you have an AIR pump, of course), but you don't have any hookups for the digital EGR valve in either case on your 86, since the digital EGR wasn't even a dream in some engineer's head at that time.

Project Raven is on hold... She's a body shell with a rather large collection of parts. 1987 Pontiac Firebird, T-top, 1991 VIN T engine, getting MegaSquirted. 85 T-5 5-Speed manual trans. Hybrid 3100 V6 swap nearly complete, too much body work to do first . Restomod in progress. So many parts to replace, so little money .

Yea If I'm not mistaken the '90 3.1 is just like the '89 2.8 then the '91-'92 3.1 is when they went to electronic egr .
ITS ALIVE. Got 3.1 in a couple of days ago. Went fairly smooth. Started right up. Had issue with MAF sensor. Replaced runs great. Now I cant keep my son home. Blame you guys...HA HA... I want to thank 89-bird, 86transam.man, TomP, Gumby, bl85c, Maverick H1L and everybody else who gave the great advice. This site ROCKS. Maybe now I can give a little advice from time to time. Signed Randy and my missing in action son Tyler
PS There is a thread called stupid MAF sensor . TomP has a great chart on testing maf sensor. In our case the film was really bad. Tried cleaning it but did not work. Bought new one.

When I was young I had a 1981 Camaro Z28. I loved it. I bought it brand new. the fun I had! When my son wanted a car, he wanted a 81 camaro to start with. He then found the 86 Firebird for cheap. When I was young I remember the new 3rd gens coming out and hated them. But now I really like the 3rd gen style. Ya... you are right, if and when I run accross another firebird, I will buy it. Maybe just a little newer 89 or up maybe....
