84 Firebird 2.8 2bbl

Hey everyone. Been tackling a problem for sometime now. The engine was and is now doing. The block was swapped with and 89 2.8L just to put that out there. Carb rebuilt, new float (float is balanced to spec), new fuel filter and modded in a inline clear filter with an electric fuel pump 5-7psi rating. Distributor rebuilt, new plugs, wires, new cap, and rotor, checked a replaced just about every vacum line, new pcv valve, and air filter. Now to the problem... the car at first would not idle right at all so played with the timing and got that dead on to stock specs. Then i started stalling so i tickered a lot to find out the tank is allowing air and buildup to the pump. So i then ran fuel out of a bottle to the pump and ding it stays running. Now when i attempt to test drive as soon as i press the gas peddle it stalls or attempts to stall no power. But when in park i can rev the car with no problems. I am running out of ideas or am i overlooking something.... Comments greatly needed =). Cheers

Try replacing your gas cap with a non-vented cap and see how that does .

The engine runs fine when the pump feeds directly from a bottle but not when hooked up to the fuel line from the tank? Sounds like a problem I had with my '71 Formula 400!

Try disconnecting the rubber hoses from the pump and the tank and blow the line out with compressed air. That solved my fuel feed problem on the Formula.

Good luck!

Re: 84 Firebird 2.8 2bbl

I just reread your original post.

Where is your electric fuel pump located? It should be mounted as close as possible to the fuel tank as those things push a lot better than they pull.

Cheers!

Re: 84 Firebird 2.8 2bbl

I also recently went through a major fuel feed drama with my van. I found the following faults over a period of two weeks.

1. Hose clamp at tank outlet broken, allowing mechanical pump to suck air intermittently. Replaced clamp and all rubber hoses.

2. Undersized mechanical pump installed by previous owner. Installed new correct pump.

3. Dirty filter. Replaced original carb-mounted filter and added see-through inline filter.

4. Cleaned carburetor with compressed air.

After doing all that, the van would still stall. I could rev it in idle but it would die or run very poorly when I put it in gear. Drove me nuts because I had done "everything."

5. Cleaned carb again with LOTS of compressed air. 5 minutes at least with 120 psi.

The van has been running perfectly since then. It idles smoother than it ever did since I first installed the rebuilt carb more than a year ago. I suspect that a bit of dirt was still in it when it when it was shipped to me.

I purposely didn't mention it is a Ford van until now.

FORD - found on road, dead
DROF - driver returned on foot

Both applied to me a couple of weeks ago.
