my newish 91 auto v6 camaro

hey guys im new to thirdgen... ive had my 91 camaro rs for a few months now and i love it...

so i have a small understanding on cars and what not but im no expert at all.

the idle is all over. it will idle normal, and then randomly drop down really slow and jump back up, ocasionally stalling. When the car is given alot of gas/acceleration, when the auto transmission is changing gear it will not change gear, and almost make a sound like its redlined. it wont change gear untill i ease off the gas and accelerate gently.

now i dont plan to be beating the hell out of this car, and im not a speed freak or anything, i just noticed that this is not normal, and i want a solid base and make sure its running at its best before restoring it.

thanks alot for any help and ill put up pictures and stuff soon

Sounds like you have a trans problem. I would take care of that first. Adjust your TV cable(instructions are in the tech section) while your at it. Then we can try and figure out why its idling wrong. I would check the common wear out items first...have you done a tune up recently?

+1 for major tune up if you haven't. My old Escort had what I thought was tranny problems. but giving it new plugs, wires, coil, seafoam, oil and trans fluid, made it like new.

Definitely do a good tuneup... If you still have idling problems, then it is probably a sticking Idle Air Control Valve. I just got done reworking the heads and everything above them on my 1992 Firebird V6, including the entire ignition system (except the coil). I even took the injectors out and had them cleaned, but the car would still die sometimes when I would slow down to turn into a parking lot or something.

I changed the IAC valve, and now it idles great. It no longer dies or surges when slowing down to make a turn, or when the AC kicks on.

hey again... changed oil with 5w30 and put in high grade gas.. still same thing... will probably change plugs soon. noticed distributor was a bit loose, and when i pressed it down it bumped up and down... a screw or snap seems to be missing, thinking it could be the problem?
