! its a full restoration project and my fuel current cable is not getting current. i checked the relay its fine. the cables are good too. does the computer have anything to do with the fuel pump? or the relay is the only thing controlling it? I NEED HELP! thank you!!
its a 2.8L V6 1986. what fuses on the fenderwall? next to the battery?
The "on the line fuse" on this camaros/firebirds is located on the passenger side fender in a little black square boc you have to open...
There is also a fuel pump fuse on the fuse box under the dash..it says "FP" on it
hmm yes i had already seen the two fuses that are around the battery.. but they were both good. and the fuse box under the dashboard has the letters all fadded out so i cant read anything its like they had never been there.. but i checked them all and they were all still good.... another question what is ECM and ALDL? ECM is the computer right?
For future reference: The ALDL is the factory diagnostic connector, a 12 pin connector located behind a cover on the driver's side foot well insulator where the driver's right knee usually is (by the radio and heater controls, assuming you're not in Europe, which I don't know about). The ECM is the engine computer, the Engine/Electronic Control Module.
Moving on:
2 things run the fuel pump: The ECM, through the wiring and the relay, and the oil pressure switch, which is a 2-wire sensor like thing screwed into a port on the oil filter adaptor (the 1-wire thing is for the oil pressure light or gauge). If the relay doesn't work, then the oil pressure switch should run the fuel pump once the switch sees oil pressure.
There is an easy test for the ECM and fuel pump wiring. Uncover your ALDL. Get a battery power source from SOMEWHERE, and a ground. Put the ground wire in the top right terminal of the ALDL (terminal A) and the battery power source momentarily in the lower left terminal. If the relay is good and energizes, the fuel pump will run (meaning your ECM is shot). If not, you could have a bad pump, relay, or wiring. Also check to see if the oil pressure switch is working by connecting both terminals with a jumper wire (one wire is constant hot and the other runs straight to the pump). If the pump runs, the switch is bad.
Also, you have to crank the car for a few seconds to build enough oil pressure to close the oil pressure switch. If the pump doesn't run when the terminals are joined at the switch, then you can try to jar it into motion with some method (jammed pump or bad wiring in pump) by somehow vibrating the gas tank sharply.
