Ok guys well ive been piecing and planning out once again a turbo build. I know i bounced back and forth but an ls1 just isnt good for my budget, age(insurance), and everything else. So im back to the turbo planning.
WELL ive been talking to a good friend of mine that has a GMC typhoon and i know they are the 4.3 motor but they run a fmic that is air/liquid cooled. Now as far as I can tell all of you turbo guys have ran just the air/air fmic right?
After looking at our cars and the way the air gets to the fmic/radiator and so on its not like the tuner cars that have the fmic in the opening in the air dam where air REALLY gets the cooler. So would a air/liquid fmic benefit us more? Im just wondering as to me in our cars it seems like the air really doesnt flow well into the coolers' area if you know what i mean. I was thinkin about also going away with the fog lights and building a dual air feed into where the fmic would be. Correct me if im wrong but wouldnt the greater mass of air aid in the fmic ability to cool down the air?
As a side thought i was also thinking of making one fog light hole supply more air to the fmic while the other supplys the air to the turbo through a filter? Would that be a good idea or does it not really matter. Im probably just thinking to far out of the box but i like to do that alot
Let me know what you guys think. Im usually a good designer and good with ideas. Just not always a good fabricator, but thats what friends and others are for.

Don't worry about what the tuner guys are running. If your concerned about your intake air temps, and this of course is based on how much psi your shooting for, just get yourself an alky kit, as that will solve the problem. TTA's "scoop" their air to the intake, because they are obviously limited to the Trans Am nose w/no openings, and this method works just fine, even without methanol injection....
Haha well set tuners aside as it was just an illistration to see if you knew what i was talking about...wouldnt it help?
I mean i know alky would deff do the job but would running air from the fog light area to the fmic offset what an alky injection do?
If so then run both? You could run more boost safetly. See im thinking this way cause this car will be an around town car/dd car while running lower boost but also would like the car to do pretty decent on the strip.
Either way would the air/liquid fmic help at all?
I still have ALOT of other things to take care of before I get too involved in this idea. Im just looking to see what people think. I usually come up with good ideas but never write them down...so heres my writing them down.
Additional air/liquid to the FMIC will always help, but it's the size (and quality) of the IC that really matters. If your only planning on running up to 15-psi, then alky really isn't needed, but it does help though. You can always go the same route as the TTA and have a fan aid with cooling the air temps down, Click Here, but methanol is so much more efficient....
.... you can also do what Marty did to his Trans Am nose to cool off the IC;
Thanx for the info and suggestions. I was sitting here thinkin about the install and was thinking of doing something different and out of the box. Im thinking the fan idea might be my best bet tho.
Seeing as for now when I get this all going I will only be starting off at like 6-7psi to learn the ropes then my top goal was to get around 18-20psi safetly.
My biggest thing stopping me right now is that I still havent figured out why my computer and cable wont connect to my car. Once I can get some logs down then I can learn how to tune. Then and only then will I put any of the turbo stuff on the car.
unless your sucking really hot air into the turbo, a cold air intake isn't going to be very effective when used with a good FMIC. The 'tuner' cars run a big FMIC that has a huge opening because sometimes overheating can be a problem with that much IC blocking your radiator. Upgrading your cooling system in a couple ways can cure this problem. taking out the A/C, and putting in dual fans are probably the 2 best ways to cure overheating. you might not have any overheating problems at all though.
like street lethal said, its not as much about airflow to the intercooler. The size and quality is what really makes a difference. An IC will cool down intake temperatures just by being out of the engine bay, away from heat.

Alright cool. Well thank you for the info guys. Im in the planning everything out and pricing stage right now. My biggest thing i need to overcome is that I still cant get my laptop to connect to my car so I cant start practicing doing tunes on the factory set up to get a hang of it yet. Once I get that done I already saved up the money to do some stuff to my car so its just a matter of time now.
Are you going to use code $59? You know you can't just boost a stock 1bar map, right? The ecm needs a way to see what the pressure is.

Increasingly I find the difference between a 'fact' and an oppinion is the number of people who believe it.

Lol ya i know...i havent decided what code to run yet. I was leaning towards the $59 tho. When I was talking about factory I meant for now im going to play with the factory code and factory motor to get a hang of it before I put any turbo parts on.
Fits fine, plenty of air space between rad and intercooler. Air damn will push air straight up to that space and fans will suck it through.
Havent driven the car much yet except round the block few times, never overheated yet except when waterpump stopped working
I got a good rad, stock dual fans and electric pump with 170 thermostat
Turbos suck air from CAI in both corners behind the head lights. Battery in the trunk, no evap stuff so i have room there.
For a single turbo setup, just suck from the battery box area and relocate to trunk
Ive seen posts on your car before. Id have to say that is a SWEET SET UP! Im not tooo far from you either. Id like to make a trip some time and get a ride in that one!
Whenever it runs i'll let you know haha. I'm moving to texas in January but the car is stayin up here in PA for alittle while
hmmm...I have a heated garage with painted floor and everything that you could keep it in, in new york
It would look really nice next to my firebird...your motor might some how jump out and fall into my engine bay tho....darn motors these days, running around like they have no owners

if ur not that far away i can lend u a hand when ur ready to do the build
Um if im correct thats down by NYC sort of right? Im all the way up in the Rochester/Buffalo area. that would be quite the drive for you. Thank you for the offer tho. Im sure during the build I will keep in touch with you for questions.
